Alright guys,

I posted a thread before regarding my hands cramping and having problems turning the club face through impact. I went to the doctor and he diagnosed me with tendonitis in my wrist. I was wondering if anyone had any excercises for conditioning the muscles surrounding the wrist so that I can get rid of the problem. Its driving me crazy. Should I just rest it? Thanks.

Did you ask your doctor??

I would not want medical advise from a golf forum.
Maybe excercising it makes it worse.

Tendonitis is a repititve motion thing. I have had it in my elbow and have had to do strengthening exercises for the surrounding muscles to keep it from coming back.

Exercises that make you grip and squeeze should work. I forget what they are called, but the things shaped like a V that you squeeze in your hands should work pretty well.

I've had it in my elbow and shoulder.

Jones is correct. You need to strengthen the muscles around the joint to protect it. You alsow need to rest it to let the inflamation go down. Lastly, some ideprofen (sp?) should help the inflamation, too. Don't take too large a dosage and only for a few days.

When you can swing again, i would recomend maybe working on your swing also. You might have active hands to compensate for something else in your swing. This is only a suggestion since i have never seen your swing and probably couldn't give you any advice if i did.

You may want to reconfirm the diagnosis with your doctor - if he's not a sports medicine specialist, it is likely that he has misdiagnosed what is probably tendonosis and not tendonitis. There is a quickly growing amount of medical literature on this, and apparently actual tendonitis is very rare, while tendonosis is much more common. The issue is that the treatments and timeframes for recovery are quite different - pursuing a treatment program for tendonitis will not do much to resolve the actual cause of the injury.

Do you get a clicking whenever you make a fist in your wrist? then most likely you to have tendonitis (carpal tunnels)

The only thing that you can do about tendonitis is rest it and that's it.

Exercise while you have it will make it worse.

A good one to help build up wrist strength that I used to use when playing hockey is this.

Take a round piece of wood about 14-18" wide. Drill a hole in the middle. Tie a 3-3.5' length of rope to it and at the other end a weight. I used to use around 5lbs or so.

All you do then is using your hands rotate the wood to roll the rope up and down over and over. You'd be amazed at the forearm workout you get after a bit. Having good surrounding muscle strength is a great way to avoid tendon injuries (I've had a lot of knee problems and having strong leg muscles has toned down the pain a lot).

Where in the wrist is your pain located? Also is there swelling, grinding, or pin-point tenderness? What other activities bother it?

    • Day 39: did top golf for an hour with the family. It was fun but also not really like real golf at all. Also did some mirror work - working on the backswing stuff mostly.
    • Day 4, 1/2/26.  Played 18 today;  didn't get a chance to warm up (had I known the range was closed, I'd have hit balls at home first).  Played okay, 92 with three balls in the water.  It was raining for more than half the round and I didn't quite appreciate before today just how much I benefit from roll on both drives and approach shots.  I did not adapt well to this change until about hole 15, which is something I have to figure out.
    • Day 143 1-2 Arch wrist in downswing. Having a SLIGHT cup in the lead wrist at the top now. Only paused swings with some rehearsals before swinging at ball.  Used foam ball.
    • Day 459 - 2026-01-02 Had two guys on GEARS Hybrid, so I hopped on afterward (I'm going to do this a lot more often now). So… I've signed myself up for another month of backswing work in two ways: A little more extension of the trail elbow (got into the upper 90s) Less pelvis turn (low 50s).
