Hi guy
I just bought 2 iron on ebay yesterday (tm tp Muscle), and today I walked in the golf galaxy saw the new 906 f2(15deg) for only $80. I was obsessed, so I bought it too. My question is, are both really goes the same distance? (assume same swing speed, both hit on sweet spot.) The 2 iron have 19 deg on it. I can hit my 3 (21deg)iron 220 yards consistenly, so i thought i may hit 2 iron 230 +. But now I get a 3 wood, I worried the distance. Althought I don't hit wood really good now.

It is my understanding that the 2iron and 5 wood are fairly close distance wise.

Your 2 Iron will not/should not go as far as your 3 wood...your 2 Iron is 19 degrees and your 3 wood 15...there is less loft (face angle)

Most players prefer a hybrid to replace their 2 and 3 irons as the wider sole, (bottom of the club) is easier to play from a variety of lies.

In addition very few players in the amateur ranks are playing muscle back irons anymore as the off center hits go nowhere. Cavity back irons give you a bigger sweet spot, which forgives off center hits because the weight of the head is distributed around the perimeter of the iron.

Work with the three wood as you would your driver...hit it with a sweeping motion ... iron shots are more of a descending swing. Play your three wood a little further forward (ball towards the toe of your left foot) the same way you would play your driver and I think that may help.

As per the other posts a 5 wood would be similiar to a 2 iron and unless you are a pure ball striker a 19 degree 5 wood or a 16 degree hybrid would be much more forgiving and you would be more consistent

so what does a hybrid 3 iron go as far as (in terms of fairway wood)?? I recently bought an Adams IDEA hybrid and I love it, although i probablt need to bridge the gap between that and my driver (my 3 wood is old - really old - and i've lost confidence in it - probably 'cos of the small head)

Do they make 1 irons with 15* loft? Sounds more like a 0 iron to me, the Hogan Apex 1 iron I had was 18*.

Hi guy

LOL, great move. If for no other reason it will be a good club to practice with b/c it won't put up with the slop many players call a swing. I have a set of irons 1-pw and I play them. I also practice a lot with the 1 & 2 irons b/c if you can hit a 1i everything else is budda!

It looks like you already have a clarification on the 2i, and although it is interchangable with the 5w you probably won't get quite as much distance with it. Irons are more for accuracy and keeping the ball down. Someone also gave you good advice on how to hit woods and they are like the rest of the game,,,,,,,you gotta practice if you want to get good.

I am not sure if Tiger even carries a 2 iron anymore I believe he replaced it with a 5 wood.

He miss hit a 2 iron at the Buick Invitiation at Torrey Pines many years ago and eventually when to the 5 wood.

Tiger will use either one depending on the course he's playing.

I don't get the whole "I practice with clubs that are really hard to hit" thing. Like practicing with blades when you play a completely different style head just makes no sense to me. But it especially doesn't make sense when you practice with a club you don't even ever use. Why would you practice with a 1 or 2-iron on the range and then have to pull off the shot with a wood or hybrid on the course? Do you also practice hitting a persimmon driver instead of your regular driver?

LOL, yes I have a set of persimmons woods when I want to go totally retro. Those will really open your eyes to what the pro's or for that fact am's had to deal with in the 60's, 70's and 80's; very touchy.

The reason I like practicing with the old 78's is b/c they require a higher standard and closer tolerance than todays clubs to stirke the ball well. They are also better out of the rough, better around the greens, better at working the ball and better at distance control than my Missy's. The only fly in the oientment, so to speak, is that they require a good swing, but that is a plus to me b/c it keeps me focused. I've also found that if I'm play'n the old blades well the Missy's are almost boring b/c I can be very casual and get away with a sloppy swing. Personally I don't think my old blades are that hard to hit; yes you have to focus and yes you have to put a good swing on 'em, but thats why I do it, to get a good swing grooved. Also if you can hit a 1 & 2 iron you can hit hybrids with your eyes closed; woods are a little different and require practice. Its the shaft lengths with the woods that can play havoc with me, but I'm getting used to going back and forth. In short, for me, if its too easy its just not fun, but I tend to be a little different
