Harbour Town Golf Links is great, and the Heritage

My son and I went to the "Nabisco" tournament in 1989 (now know as the Tour Champioship) and it was held at the Harbour Town Golf Links. Then, in 1992, my wife and daughter went with me and my son to the "Heritage" at the same course. All of us agree---it is a great place to go, and we envy those who have condos there. My wife and I almost bought one on the ocean, and to this day, I could kick myself for not doing it.

The lighthouse is a great landmark, and the Calibogue Sound makes for an interesting backdrop and allows the boats to anchor just off the shore. More importantly, the course is still a nice test of golf and a shotmaker's test with its small greens, and narrow holes. Some of the big hitters do not like the layout because it rewards accuracy and punishes wildness. Davis Love III is the "King" of the Heritage since he has won it five times (Payne Stewart did win it backto-back, and of course, Boo Weakley has just done that).

Look at Davis so far---four shots back of Brian Gay's lead! Nice going. The are certain courses for certain horses, and this one really has been good to Davis. And look who is two back---Lee Janzen, another shotmaker, without the length that Davis has. I hope he wins, since he is one of our favorites, even though he edged Payne out twice in the US Open---1993 at Baltusrol and in 1998 at Olympic.

One of my brothers has been there. He had to email me pictures of him and his family up in the light house. I'm surprised he didn't run into Boo Weekley or something.

Great area. Very peaceful with all the small shopping areas and overhanging moss.

I remember the first time I visited, time share on the beach at Christmas '91. We had a tee time at Palmetto Dunes (?) and one of our group was wearing light classy denim. They refused to allow him on the course and he was steamed. Particularly when the pants they were offering to sell were absurdly overpriced and looked tacky.

We were told you had to cross the bridge before the denim rule was absent. So we found an intriguing new course and ended up playing it throughout our stay, other than one round on the island, just so we could say we actually played on Hilton Head itself.

But that course across the bridge was the highlight. I wish I could remember the name. We showed up on Christmas Eve afternoon and they let us play for free as long as we walked. They wanted to close up early, with no carts sent out past early afternoon.

The lighthouse itself is not as impressive in person. Kind of clanky and the paint job is best viewed at a distance.

We've done family vacations on Hilton Head for many years and I love everything about it. We've played Harbour Town a couple times -- pricey but memorable. And not too difficult from the white tees.

Sadly, my son and I have not yet played Harbour Town. When our entire family went there on vacation and to see the Heritage, we had a tee time for 3 PM on the Monday after the tournament. Rain came in overnight, and all tee times were cancelled. We hope to get back there since we followed Payne around for 4 rounds in each year and got to see each hole. We did play the Ocean Course and other courses on the island, though. We love Hilton Head, and the bicycle trails, horse ranch, etc. They really did a good job of planning to avoid overcommercialization, like what has happened at Myrtle Beach. Is the horse ranch still there?
