Are there any smaller head drivers left?

Yup; but they tend to be older. Good news is you get many of them used at very good prices. I'm a fan of the older Titleists and currently use a 983E (awesome; 350cc I think) but also liked the 983K and before that the 975D.

I would like to try some new drivers with smaller heads. I don't find the right rhythm with the large heads. I hit the golf ball much smoother with my wood. The big head create a lot of resistance through the air.

Are they taking the skill out of golf?

If you saw me hit the driver, you would realize that they have not. I can miss the fairway farther now than before...

No, I am not saying that new drivers aren't more forgiving and easier to hit. But if you can't square the club face, you CANT square the club face. I don't care how forgiving the driver is, it is still a big skill in hitting it straight and long.

I played last night. I hit 5-7 fairways and averaged over 250 when I hit my driver. I use the orginal cleveland launcher 460 with a $30 shaft. It is 5 plus year old. Did I drive the ball well bc of my driver? I am sure the combo of shaft and driver work for me but I think it is really rediculous to discount good drivers of the ball because they use a 460cc driver.

Are you implying that it isn't easier to hit the sweet spot on these giant clubs, than an old Calloway warbird or original Burner Bubble?

Hitting it on the sweet spot alone doesn't give you a good drive. You can hit the sweet spot and still banana slice the shit out of the ball. Hitting the ball might be easier, but hitting it correctly certainly isn't.

I am not discounting good drivers of the ball. They can use any club and do it good. I am talking about the less skilled players(which is most of us). Instead of trying to better our swing and improve we just buy a driver with a bigger sweet spot. I like to know I am getting better because of skill growth rather than driver growth. It is hard to judge that when you have a driver that has the sweet spot the size of a baseball.

You'll know if your skill level is improving if you can hit the [smaller] sweet spot on all of your other clubs consistently. You'll also know it by your handicap decreasing. If you hit 14/14 drives in the fairway with a new driver and then miss every green, I guess you'll know that your improvement was all equipment upgrade (not likely).

What's wrong with making a difficult game a little easier (especially for the average player), as long as it's within the rules?

Because it is going to make it harder to find clubs that I like!!!

Maybe it is just an asthetic thing. Maybe I am a retro grouch. Who knows, I am just happy to be playing again. I did see a bunch of Burner Bubbles on ebay for like $10. Maybe I should stock up for the future. Titleist 975d's too!

Haha, it's alright, I've been there before. I used to use smaller drivers and this tiny little steel-headed 3 wood. Then I wasn't able to practice every single day, and it became harder to hit the ball on the sweet spot every time, so I gave in and got some more modern clubs. I don't think I'd ever go back, even if I got back to that kind of ballstriking. They give you such an advantage on well struck shots as well as poorly struck ones. Wow... I remember when Burner Bubbles were big.

I use a Titleist 983K which has a 365cc head. It's a few years old, but it's awesome. My brother still uses his

What are you talking about? lol. the 975J is a great driver. When my driving gets stale, I still use it from time to time. Picked it up at a garage sale for 20 bucks. There are some small headed drivers you can get that are farily recent. Taylor Mades R7 425 (recomended) can be had for good prices, and titliest has a 440 head out right now. Or you can just call up Nike and see if they'll send you a copy of the 380cc head he is using now...

I agree, that thing was my best club for years. I'm not sure what was so funny about the 975J. You would've thought he was talking about his buddy who still drives a Yugo...
