I think I am just tensing up when I step up to them. I went and played one of the courses today and hit 2 decent tee shots out of the 3 par 3's. The weird this is that when I swing to easy is when I chunk the ball. I think I have been decelerating on my downswing. I am kind of in the middle of a swing change and my iron distance has went way up, so choosing clubs is also a little difficult. I also didn't tee up on any of the par 3's and just hit it off the grass. Maybe that has made it more of a regular shot for me. I think I need to tee up a few irons when I go to the range next. Anyways, thanks for the advice!

par 3's over 180 yards piss me off. But anyway, i take a cue from Hogan when im confronted with a long par 3 than im not comfortable with in the tee box. Hogan (at marion i think) layed up on a par 3 he deemed treacherous all 4 times he played it.

Believe it was Billy Casper.

This isn't just for par 3's but stressful shots in general. I know my biggest misses are when I swing easy. I think the best thing to do is to get up there with a club that you know is enough and try to hit it hard. I don't mean over swing but don't try to hit the half shot. The half shot IMO one of the hardest things in golf. When I am under pressure I would rather take one that I know I can not hit it over and just let go. If I am a little short, OK, but if I take one that I have to take some off, I hit a big hook and an impossible up and down.

The layup idea is not out of the question on my nemesis hole......especially from the further tee box along the woodline.

Gotta get the laser out and see how far the drop area is.

Next time I play this hole, I'm hitting to the drop area. This will freak out my playing partners....at first.....they'll think I've ballooned one or something odd.....they'll get the picture when they see me grinning walking off the tee box with a wedge of some type in hand.

Wedge.....wedge....putt or even three plus a tap-in beats the heck out of what I've scored here lately.

On a par 3 of 180 yards I'd grab my 6 iron and swing away. No different than if I were 180 yards out on a fairway. If I miss, oh well. Chip and putt like any other green. Well, chip and putt-putt, and maybe putt. And maybe chip.

I think I am just tensing up when I step up to them. I went and played one of the courses today and hit 2 decent tee shots out of the 3 par 3's.

This happens to me usually as a result of trying to guide the clubhead as opposed to just swinging (freely) easy. Sometimes taking less club and making a good full swing (if there isn't a forced carry) is a better choice for me. Cheers

    • Day 299: played 18. Hit the ball well, but did not score well. I think I ended up +10, with half of that coming on 2 holes.
    • Day 549, May 4, 2024 After lessons and working with Natalie, hit some balls for awhile. Just backswing stuff. Forgot about the slightly shorter stuff, though I'm sure it was as they were only about 75% speed with brief pauses.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
