I was really struggling with hooking the ball with both my irons and woods. I worked on my swing a lot getting all the mechanics correct and that has really straightened out my ball flight. I now hit my irons & driver/3-wood dead straight 75% of the time and the other 25% I push the ball to the right. I'm guessing I still have a slight in-to-out swing pattern and it feels like my hands are slightly getting stuck behind me on the downswing. Just wondering if anyone has any drills to help cure the occasional pushed shot?

Also, I cannot understand this but the only club in my bag that I'm still struggling to keep straight is my 19* hybrid. It seems like I either hook or push every shot with it. I thought this thing was supposed to be easy to hit lol but I can't for the life of me get it on a consistent trajectory let alone direction.

You know a hook is a push with a clubface closed relative to the club's path at impact, right? In other words, you're probably closer than you think - it could be a shaft timing thing, a swingweight thing, or something like that.

Maybe the hybrid has a hook-biased face?

That did cross my mind but I could have sworn I read somewhere that it was actually fade-biased due to a slightly more open face than old models (it's a Titleist 909h)

I know I have a natural in-to-out swing path but I'm having a heck of a time trying to get my swing to stay on plane. I struggle with getting my hands stuck behind me on the downswing. Would working on clearing the left hip at the start of the downswing help keep the club more out in front of me?

I usually push the ball when I get tired. Something to do with sliding instead of turning for me.

"I struggle with getting my hands stuck behind me on the downswing."

Makes alot of sense. This will cause a push. I have battled this problem with my swing before.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

i had the same problem at the beginning of the season too. All my shots were either hooks or pushes and it was from getting "stuck."

What has helped me was watching Tiger during his pre-swing routine. He just kinda turns his body with his hands and club infront of his body. It is kinda hard to explain so i'll try and find a video. Anyway, I tried it my last round and i struck the ball ALOT better.

I was having this problem as well. What helped me was the thought of holding my hips back instead of trying to clear them. I was more or less rotating my shoulders around myself and thats what was causing it, or so I was told. Try think of starting the downswing with your arms and not your hips.

    • No. If there was a place no closer to the hole that afforded some relief, you could have dropped there. If you were truly as far away from the hole as you could, in the "back" of the bunker, then… your options were basically to play it as it lies (lied? lay?) or take the penalty stroke and drop behind the bunker (keeping the point where the ball was between your drop and the hole).
    • Day 121 - Had a tournament today, not my best. I was hitting everything off the heel.
    • Day 4 (5 May 24) - mirror work focused on “feel of weight” transfer onto lead foot.  Continued work to develop trust in lead foot being able to handle full weight pressure…
    • Ok, so I’m still confused here. Are you saying I could have used the only available Spot in the bunker even though it was 6-7 feet closer to the hole?
    • Yes. If you choose to take the ball out of the bunker instead of taking maximum available relief… it costs a stroke.
