I recently bought an 09 Taylor Made Burner driver and really love it. The only thing is I put the ball in the clouds every time I hit it off the tee. I know that it has to be something that I'm doing. I don't have near as much control putting it in the middle of the fairway when I am hitting it so high.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Really? I have a Tour Burner and it launches a lot lower than other drivers. I tested several on a demo day and the TB was the one with the most distance and lowest trajectory for me.

I'm going to a Demo day on June 8th I beleive and I am going to hit a few others and see what I can figure out. I really love the driver, I just have a problem when it gets up in the clouds I'm sure I'm losing distance and driving is my strong point of my game.

What are some good low spin balls?

I've been hitting the Srixon Zstar x the last few rounds and its working well. I swing about 105mph. 100 towards the end of the day.

I'm going out to the course around 1 and am going to try teeing the ball a little lower on the range and see what I can get from that. I already tee it somewhat low though, so I'm not sure what I am going to do.

You may want to look into a shaft with a high kick point. That made a lot of difference for me. I used to balloon the ball off the driver, ending up with 180y drives with my old Superquad with reg shaft in 10mph winds. Now, with the same swing, I keep it much lower (still too high though) and am able to get 230y into the same winds.

Now, with all this said.. It is mainly your swing. I know, because I have the exact same problem and a pretty similar swing speed. I can get pretty annoyed when I get paired up with some guy and he out drives me with his dinky little swing because he keeps it low and the fairways are rock hard so he gets 50y or roll and I get maybe 10y.

I recently changed drivers as well. I had the Nike 5900 and switched to the '09 burner. At demo days, the Taylormade clubs gave me a much better ball flight than the Nike.

But lately, my drives are getting up there too...

The '09 burner's shaft is longer than normal... it's 46.25 inches as opposed to the standard 45. Does anyone know what would happen if I put a 45 inch extra stiff shaft in it? Would that bring the ball flight down a little? a lot? Would I lose much distance? Would the head still be as hot?

I'll probably end up doing nothing at all to it... but wondering what happens and if the shaft can affect how the face of the driver feels...

I'm somewhat tall (6'2"), so the longer shaft helps me in that nature.

Today I felt a little bit better on the course. I still have my slice, but I tried to compensate for it and usually could put it in the fairway. I was still hitting it pretty high. I know I'm losing 50 yards or so every drive because its getting so high and up in the wind and clouds.

I just don't know what to do. I really love my driver, and if I can get to hitting it not so high, I know I'll love it even more.

Try a different shaft. The stock shaft is meant for mid to high ball flight.

Do you have any suggestions about what I could look into?

He said 105 earlier. I personally love the shaft I selected for my Tour Burner. It's a Fujikura E360 Stiff. You'd want to look into low-mid launching shafts with torque depending on how quick your swing is.

I suggest walking into a Golfsmith, for example, and trying out all kinds of different shafts.

As far as balls go, the Bridgestone e7+ is suppose to create a lower ball flight. The Srixon Trispeed is a similar ball to the e series from Bridgestone.

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

Exactly.....this is one of the great things about this club for many players who want more carry. My Father just added one of these drivers and 3 woods to his bag. Played a round with him on Wednesday and was highly impressed with his play. He really gamed these two Burners well.

The shafts are very....very light, though. I suspect someone with a higher swing speed would really sky these. I think you can find a happy medium with a reshafting....hopefully for not too much $$$$$. Go see a full service golf shop that can make some recomendations and check your swing speed and launch angle, etc. I'll bet you can get this done with a new shaft/grip that fits you best for under $100. Good luck. I recently went through the same thing.....my G10....loved the driver....but the shaft did get up a bit too high for me.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
