Yeah, I saw one at CNNSI as well that said Zach Johnson and Trevor Immelman didn't qualify for the U.S. Open. The article was right because they didn't have to qualify this week. They are already in damnit!!!!!

I thought about waiting until tonight so I could eliminate the picks made by the talking heads on the Golf Channel but I guess I will just wing it. I have to take Phil, I think Phil is at his peak, he will never be better than he is right now. I think that Stephen Ames is a good long shot for this course. When his short irons are on he can hunt down flags which reduces the need for great putting. Don't be suprised if Jeff Maggert or Luke Donald contends either. Tiger will be unable to sustain the level of concentration needed to win after so long a layoff. The biggest suprise will be the absence of another European player other than Ames and Donald in the top ten.

The more I hear about Winged Foot, the more I think Tiger will be in contention late on Sunday. There is a solid chance he will win as well.

It's going to be mentally draining for these golfers, and Tiger is the best when it comes to mental strength.

That's another reason I picked Jim Furyk. He is second in line to Tiger when it comes to mental toughness. If Furyk's health holds up (which isn't likely due to the nasty rough tearing his body down), then I think he will win.

If Furyk's health lets him down, Tiger is the man to beat. Those two will battle it out until the cows come home.

i'm going to go against the flow and say that Tiger either misses the cut or withdraws from the tournament...as much as i'd like to see him do well, golf isnt really a sport where u can "will" yourself to play well...and i think hes going to really really struggle

Tiger has "willed" himself to play well countless times. So, I disagree, simply speaking.

Oops, hard for Maggert to contend when he didn't qualify. Would you believe I meant Geoff Olgivy.

Things aren't looking too hot for Mr. Woods. Ouch. On another note, I hope that one of my fantasy picks makes it to the weekend.

Yeah, you just can't hit 3 or 4 fairways and end up in good shape at Winged Foot. Tiger has missed in all the wrong spots so far and currently sits at +9. Hell, that may get him to the weekend for all I know.

I'm not sure how many of my guys will make it to the weekend in fantasy, but CH3 is going steady at -1 so far today through 11 holes. That's shocking after opening with 77. I can't remember who else I picked to be honest. :/

Tiger now at +10 and he didn't birdie the short par 5. He's got 4 holes left and with Steve Stricker now in the clubhouse at -1, Tiger needs to pick up at least 1 shot, probably 2 to have any chance of making the weekend.

Yep, +10 probably isn't going to get the job done, unless every golfer above him chokes and finishes outside of Tiger, putting him into the top-60 and ties. I know, that won't happen, so basically Tiger needs to finish at +8 or +9. It's not looking real likely.

Phil tee's off at 1:25pm. We'll see if he can keep his even numbers going. But so far no one has stood out as a real contender for the championship.

We definitely might have a real close race heading into Sunday!

Are you all forgetting that the cut after ONE round would have been +8? +16 may make the cut this year. C'mon now... I realize you can't just multiply the first-round cut by two, but +12 has a 90% chance of making it.

The average score for today is playing almost 1 less then yesterday. So that will hurt Tiger if the trend continues. But iacas you could be right that +12 might be ok.

    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
