I just started playing regularly again last summer after a layoff for about 5 years. I was a competitive golfer from the age of 13 on through 22 years old playing in high school and college, finishing with about a 1.5 handicap when i was 22.

Afterwards, it was more fun, playing once or twice a week and the occasional tournament.

Last fall I got my handicap back down to 2.8, but any real competitive round I'd shoot 80 - 85.

This year, I've played roughly 10-15 rounds already since early April, and I might have broken 80 once. I seem to be averaging 40 - 43 for 9 most of the time, 80 - 85 for 18.

I played in a 54 hole publinx event this past weekend, 27 holes sat, 27 sunday, shooting 43, 41, 39, 44, 40, 43. I also attempted to qualify for the Michigan Amateur yesterday, shooting 85. Again, 42, 43. Each round is usually equipped with 2 - 4 doubles, maybe a triple. 1 or 2 birdies.. if that. It's getting to the point where I want to quit .. I just can't score anymore .. Yesterdays round I counted I hit 9 greens, 9 fairways, and 37 putts. 2 penalty strokes. I'm hitting the ball solid .. Had about 5 birdie opportunities inside 15 feet and I didn't make a single one. 4 doubles. 2 with penalty strokes, the others just poor putting and chipping.

I find overall that it's my mental focus throughout the round.. I get down on myself knowing I'm a better player than this. Which in turn leads to more problems, bogey trains, etc.

I'm planning on playing in 4 more weekend tournaments throughout the summer, and I'm honestly thinking of not playing in them.

you are a veteran golfer making a comeback. you are lucky because you know that you did it before and it a matter of being patient and practicing and getting your mojo back!

Good Luck, we know and you know that you can do it! hand in there and work on your up and down percentage and putting and everything will fall into place with your scoring.

Just remember that the majority of golfers out there wish we had your problem.

    • Amazing picture.   One of my favorite vacations!
    • I can see how some people might not think or know it is how they are pushing against the ground that causes your hips to spin in a certain way. It makes sense when he describes torque. Also, that PGA Tour average is like 2x more push with the left leg than the right leg.  Yea, if someone is very right side dominant, or just has a weakness in their left leg, they could struggle with early extension no matter how they try to keep the tush back. Even if you feel your left leg extend, if the direction of the force is not pushing the hip back and up behind you, it can push your leg back and away from the target more, which is not ideal.  Pending muscle weaknesses and mobility, I almost feel like early extension is solved at this point.

    • Ah man, that is on the northern border. I was out at the Grand Canyon last year with the family. We hit the south rim and went down to Sedona. Which, it is unfair how gorgeous it is out in Sedona.
