On the practice green I like to pick a nice straight 10' putt and roll it to the hole. And then 3/4 to the hole, and then 1/2 way. It kinda helps me get a feel for distance.

On the course, one thing that has helped me is to pace off the distance. Visually I know I don't need to hit a 10' putt harder than a 30', but to actually pace it off, and get a feel for the distance seems to help get the proper pace.
I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

the key to distance control are the following:

1) lots of practice putting distance control with lag putting and practicing 3 - 4 footers
2) same tempo putting stroke, distance is controlled with the length of your backstroke and forward stroke
3) keep the putter low to the ground on the take away and you will strike the ball solid and more consistently
4) dedicate putting everyday and you will soon find that your putting skill are sharpened and your confidence in distance control and making 3 - 4 footer raises.
5) stick with a pre-putt routine and use it everytime, even for tap in.

I have been practicing putting for 2 hours 3 times a week and I notice a big difference in putter control. Birdies and par saves become routine and putting under 30 strokes becomes expected.

It is all about feel. There isn't much you can do to learn feel. Practice, practice, practice. Some people 'get it', some don't. I have seen people who have played for 20 years that have never got it.

Think of it like this. You can't teach a basketball player how hard to shoot a free throw or a 3 pointer. You can teach them the proper technique, but in the end, it is up to the player to figure out how hard to shoot the ball, it just takes practice and repetition.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Develop a solid putting routine and really focus on "rolling" the putt into the hole, not hitting, smacking or as some say, "knock it in"...roll it in instead

Practice putting to the far side fringe and just get a feel for speed while always gripping the putter lightly..that's all I got. good luck

I definitely agree with ks8829's post, number 2 and 5.Tempo again is the key and no declaration.Putting to me is the same as pitching and chipping,if you
decelerate the shot is lost.

I also found that keeping the putter low to the ground on the back stroke helps keep the line for the testy 3 - 4 footers. If you watch the pros on TV they always keep the putter low to the ground

If you practice putting for an hour you will discover your own putting stroke that is repeatable for you. You may not hit the 300 yard drive like the pros but you can learn to putt like the pros if you put the time and right technique into the putt.

    • Day 601 - 2026-05-25 Short-ish day with only some later Skillest lessons, so I stayed after and got some swings in. GEARS Hybrid was set up for a lefty, so… not that. 🙂
    • Day 21, May 25.  Hit "the whole bucket" as practice today after reviewing my Skillest lesson.  I think something crept into my swing last week that wasn't in the lesson, so I went back to the lesson and renewed my focus.  Each ball was a minute or so, 2-3 slow rehearsal backswings and checking the mirror for how far back I was going. "The whole bucket" means every ball I have in the bin at my indoor practice room;  I counted when I put them back, that's six dozen plus six total.  That is probably more full swings than I took over the weekend (excluding range warm-ups) in two rounds!  But these were all with a 6-iron.
    • Day 265 5-25 Hit some balls just to see where i was, no "thoughts' except getting arms in front. Did some recording where i focused on getting chest through and arms in front.
    • Day 76 (25 May 26) - Broke out the "vintage" clubs (MacGregor blades, Wilson 4150 laminates) to work with clubs that are much less forgiving.  Worked through the bag using hard foam balls for the full swings, regular balls for the chips and pitches.  Found it to be a more focused session on making consistent contact.
    • Can you elaborate on this?  There's a par-4 hole at the course I've played the most (was my home course for over a decade, now 50 miles away but I still go and play there) whose green is below the fairway and I realized recently it's one of three holes on the course I've never made birdie, despite that I often have a short iron into the green for my second shot.  It isn't even that I haven't made birdie, but I realize I often don't hit the green.  My typical play of the hole is to have a near-GIR and sometimes I get up and down, but not as often as I would if I were trying to 2-putt.
