Whoops, didn't see this. I like Sterling Hills. Some solid holes on that course. Number 1 is a good test, that next long par 3, I think its the 2nd actually. There's another hard par 3 on the back, and couple great par 4s too. Yeah, I like that course. That par 5 18th is kinda goofy though.

Its the hole with the two ponds to the left, bunkers guarding both sides of the fairway and tree lining the far side of fairway. The green is elevated.

I know this asked about LA, I am up in the High Desert, Victorville has two great places to play. One is Westwinds Golf Course and the other is Green Tree. Super Twilight is $8 walking and the courses are usually empty. I am new to golf so I am not familar with other courses in the LA area, but these are nice courses and for the price you can't beat it. Super friendly staff at both of these also

#6 is a par 4 with two water hazards on the left and traps on the right. From the tee the fairway looks about 10 yards wide. The hole bends to the left, so anything a little right is in the sand, anything left is wet. You have to hit a perfectly straight drive to have a shot at the green, which is oddly shaped with lots of levels. You regularly drive the ball 300+ so it probably is less of a problem for you. Anyone driving 230-250, anything other than down the middle, has reason the worry. If you look at it on a sat. image you can see that a long drive down what looks like the center could even hit traps on the left.

The greens are as fast as Rustic but with many more tricky slopes and level changes. I usually have 30-34 putts, Sunday at Sterling I had 41! My main complaint about the course is the condition of the fairways. It was rare to find a lie in a fairway that was anything other than rock hard. Other than that, even though the greens were firm they had tons of spiked up areas. Even soft spikes left inprints and little bits of grass popping up. They have the best cart GPS I've seen. It knows the distances to the pins and every hazard, measures how far you are from the tee, and keeps track of where the carts ahead of you are. SubPar

Played Westlake Village yesterday. Pretty fun little course IMO. Lots of par 3's which makes it ideal for iron practice. I actually feel that I could shoot a even par round here on a good day. I shot +8 for the day, but had a couple of bad breaks and some bad short game.

There's a 9 hole course in the Pasadena area - Alta Dena, I think - that has a turf driving range. Decent 9 hole track, too. One of only two courses where I made a birdie my first time playing the course.

I finally got over to this range today. Nice range, they are on mats right now as they repair the turf but in 2 weeks it should be back to turf range. Course looks good too

Crystalaire CC in Llano is a nice place to play up that way. Haven't ever played either of the two you mentioned. Must be extremely hot up there these days. I know it is by me, in The Valley.

For the life of me I can't picture #6 in my mind. I read the descriptions from you and P3R3, looked at the scorecard online, and even the map. It has been some time since I've played there though... Anyway, I remember Sterling being pretty fun to play.

Sterling is not what it used to be. Played there last week and it has gone downhill--it used to be one of the best courses around in terms of maintenance, but now it's slacking. The tee boxes are torn up and weedy, fairways are thin with dead spots, and the greens were bouncier than I had ever seen them before. Its still not an awful course thanks to the good layout and price, but it has definitely seen better days.

I played this round with you! you still did well, I agree thought it was a little bit torn up.

But I live in Ventura County too, and I have to add my vote to the quality of VC golf. We got lots of good courses here :D If anyone of you guys (Ben, P3r3, SubPar, enarhi) don't mind playing with a high handicapper i'd be down for a twilight round sometime

So my fractured hand has had a miraculous healing. Anyone down for a round this weekend? Preferably not in 100F heat, so a ventura type course would be the best.

I'm down (if you don't mind playing with a high handicapper). I was thinking maybe Olivas links? I like that course a lot. But i'd be down for whatever most likely. I like to play twilight to save money too if thats cool with you guys.

Olivas sounds good, normally we like to play mid day to avoid the rush. I will be a bit out of practice so I hope it isnt too bad.

I have a tournament at Olivas Aug. 15th and would like to play there between now and then. I have mixed feelings about it because it is such a long drive out there and back.

Let me know if you are playing it. I might be persuaded. Saturday or Sunday afternoon would work for me. SubPar

Yea I just realized it quite a ways out there from camarillo. Any other courses which would be cooler than the valley that wouldn't be so far away?

Wait, your from camarillo too? Its really not too bad of a drive, maybe 20 minutes. I do it at least 3 or 4 times a week probably. I'd be glad to give you a ride there if you like

Its worth the drive :) its in nice condition last time I checked. I'm going there today so I can give you an update. The practice is probably worth it too :) I personally think the course is a little bit tricky with the links style and wind and takes a some practice to get used to

    • Context:  I am on vacation, so I don't have access to my indoor practice room, and I won't for about a month. Day 12 (August 22).  Today's weather was not one where even I was going to be outside.  For whatever reason, I didn't do the putting drill today.  There was a drill I remembered from this site (the article was something akin to "five things you can do to improve that don't require talent") that involved having an iron along the back from stance, moving to backswing and holding, then moving to forward swing and holding.  So I did that for five minutes today. I also spent 90 minutes at the gym;  my main motivation for getting stronger is golf related (and I really should get back to Fit For Golf  specific workouts;  I'm not sure when I lost that habit, a poor choice on my part that I did).  Funny story, I spent 20 minutes on the Stairmaster today at the gym (the rest was weights and rests), a device I started with shortly after I took up golf because I read something about it in a Butch Harmon book.  I should be following FFG Mike's fitness advice though, not some memory of someone else.
    • Day 8 8-22 Worked on backswing length and getting some speed in backswing. Recorded swings. Was happy with practice session tonight.
    • Day 325 - 2025-08-22 Practiced for almost an hour after cleaning my cabinets to account for the new GEARS cameras and helping @OBlum for a bit. Exaggerating the same old things.
    • Yea, faster greens = shorter putting stroke. You can be more accurate.  Really, I think people who struggle with distance control struggle just as much on slow greens as fast greens. I've seen people blast putts 10-FT past the hole on 8 or 9 STIMP as much as 11-12 STIMP.  I prefer faster greens. Usually means the putting surface is better and again, shorter putting stroke.
