I think this would be interesting. After you've been reading golf magazines for awhile, all the issues look the same.

Do an informal poll or survey of the length of rounds for public courses with green fees between say $40 and $80 at evenly distributed times. I wonder if the results would be uniform or if the more congested areas would have longer rounds.

unfortunately, a course would probably sue.

also, no magazine will produce fair and balanced results when payola starts to flow.

good idea though, I am convinced the urban courses would be slower, but on weekends I bet there is a tie. Rural courses pack em in on weekends without a ranger. The urban courses seem to have rangers on weekends since they have more at stake with their reputation(my theory anyway, dont copy or ill sue)

True. Then do 6 courses for example, and don't name them.

True again about the reporting, er, advertising.

I hate to be so cynical, but magazine articles about courses and similar read more and more like advertisements.

I would have to think places like Kansas, Texas, Ohio would fare better than NY and CA.

what would be awesome if they stopped with the "fasion" sections, I dont give a flying turd what kind of belt buckles the players are wearing, or what designer pants they have.

Maybe it's because I'm from the wrong country, but what is there to sue about?

All you would be dealing with is pure fact. If the journo went to the course, and played with a stopwatch, what have they done wrong? If they timed other groups, perhaps they could get in trouble, but if they asked permission first, I don't see how. Actually a magazine over here did an article on pace of play, but I think it was about what speeds it up. They had 1 course with different groups and a control group. Can't remember what they were doing to improve speed between groups though.

One potential way to induce courses to regulate time better is to put up a website where anyone can input their time to complete a round. Then make a prominent Wall of Shame page with the say top 5 worst average times.

The problem is you can't tell whether people are telling the truth and getting enough hits on the site to make it popular enough to shame offending courses into doing something.

If enough people visited the site though, it might do something although the indifference of some owners is mind boggling. At least people can check the site to see which courses to stay away from if time is their concern.

your being served

Good luck trying to get me extradited, so you can file against me.

But seriously, back to my question, what is there to sue about?

All it takes is one pissed off club owner to feel that he is being screwed.. libel suits are common with print journalism

I was wondering why would the owners look bad for a long or short play time? Isnt it up to the individual golfers as to how long it takes them to play 18 holes? or am I missing something?
