I went out to the course today, a 9 hole par-3 local course.

They day started with me teeing off and hitting a terrible bullet way right of the first flag on a 170 yd hole. They day got worse after that, I stopped keeping score after it took me 6 strokes for the first hole alone, lol.

What I realized was I can hit fine in the driving range but its not the real deal, even if the driving range is not turf. Maybe it's my mentality or something but it was a sh*tshow out there today for all the holes. All the fundamentals went down the toilet as I tried to keep up and not keep people waiting in the tee-boxes.

I did manage to shoot a par (140 yd drive with 8 iron, chipped on to green with pw, putted) on the last hole which I guess finished the day off nice. I used my 8 iron and pitching wedge for the entire course, which may have been my problem but I am not comfortable hitting my 4-6 irons quite yet. It was alot of fun but really frustrating at times!

Don't worry about anyone except yourself when at the teebox..

and wouldn't that be a Bogey? I counted 4 strokes..

Good on you for getting out there. A couple of observations:

1) You'll find that when you start playing full length courses that it is JUST as easy to score a 6 on a par 5 as it is to score a 6 on a par 3 hole. I still haven't figured this phenomenon out except that it shows how important short game is. For a long time a course full of par 3s was my worst nightmare!

2) Good on you for picking up when you got double par-ish and picked up if someone was waiting. Some people may argue with me on this, but you're probably not going to learn anything by rushing and making a 9 because you know people are watching.

3) Stay with it. Get on the course as much as possible. You figured out that the range and the course aren't the same. I'm not that far ahead of you in my game, but I sure as hell wouldn't trade with you.

I played my first 9 hole course up here in CT about a week ago... in the rain.
It was a light rain at the time but, I played better than if the sun was shining.
We basically had the whole course to ourselves too. The other two that were on the course quit after four.. LOL.

I'm in Ct too. Might that be Highland Greens in Prospect?? If it is, don't use is as a barometer for your game, lol. Fun muck-a-luck course under the lights, add beer and yells of "Fore!"- that's about it... Par-3 courses are more grueling than they seem, especially when you miss the green. That's when birdie is gone (barring a hole-out chip/pitch), and par looks elusive. And your rhythm might be off because you can't unleash with your driver. Just have fun and work on you short game and iron game. P.S. I use the word "sh*tshow" all the time, must be a connecticut thing, lolol..

When I started playing golf, I played five full 18 hole, par 72 rounds, without keeping score. I focused on having fun, and getting my ball to the hole, but knew my scores would discourage me. I picked my shots, and focused on making decent contact with the ball and picking the right clubs for the job.

My 6th round I kept score and shot a 126;

I spent tons of time on my friends driving range before I ever decided to get on the course, So I could hit the ball a little.

The one I was referring to is Sunset Hill in Brookfield. Not a bad little course and not a par 3 course either.

I prefer 18 Candlewood Valley in New Milford though.
