I have a decent size backyard with a elevated deck connecting to my house, I have a green in my back yard and my question is can I lay any grass over a tarp on the deck that will grow on the tarp and will allow me to have a 30 yard shot to my green. I have seen info-mercials on the Golf Channel for something that may work but I am not familier with the name.

Thanks,
Ian

Zoysia (not what I prefer but what I had to get)

Curious as to why that would change your opinion to the grass I would use for the chipping area.

I'd think that, on your back porch, you'd probably want something you didn't have to worry about growing... cutting or chunking. Something artificial would be much, much easier to maintain and I'm sure would look better than a tarp covered in grass.

Ditto. Just get one of those portable hitting mats. They've come a long way recently where they react better to fat shots (i.e. more realistically).

I asked for 2 reasons,#1 I thought I was the only nut who built his own real green#2 if it was fake then a mat would be OK.Being that it is real you can build a chipping box.Approx 10x10 4 inches deep with 80/20 mix some good Bent seed maybe L93 like my green and make sure you drill some weep holes in bottom. What kind of Mower do you have?Do you stimp it?I keep mine at 11-111/2 till mid july then I adjust it to 10/101/2 during heat of summer.

absolutely get a portable artificial turf chipping square or rectangle. One bad chilli dip, and your live grass chipping spot will be ground under repair for a while.

Zoysia?? Must be the only Zoysia green in the Cincinnati area. I think one of the private courses, maybe Hyde Park, but that is really rare in this area.

My thought is no, you won't be successful growing grass on a tarp on your deck.

Get a mat.
