It's unlikely your hands are ahead of the ball off the tee. Not with a good ball position.

So... check your ball position. And if your hands are ahead of the ball off the tee (with a driver), they'll inhibit a good release. Focus on releasing the clubhead - see if that helps. After you check your ball position (too far back?), of course. With irons, of course, and every club but the driver in fact, you want your hands ahead of the ball. Left shoulder to clubhead should be a pretty straight line.

Ummm, isn't that called lag? Isn't lag considered a good thing?

Lag is good if you know how to use it.

I'd say you are probably setting up for it. But usually hands to far infront push left (if your right handed) I might be wrong on that, please correct me if I am.

I think you guys are misunderstanding him. It sounds to me like the problem he's having is that he is making a good downward strike with his irons but the clubface is pointing right(open). It is possible to deloft the clubface(like you want with an iron) and still have the clubface open, although it's not a problem most players have. I have the same problem.

I tried releasing the club more but that didn't really help, I just started hitting high hooks and duck hooks.

To fix it I've been focusing on working on keeping my right hand on top of my left hand more and making sure I don't fan the clubface open on the backswing, it is working but I still need more time with it. Or you can focus on making sure the logo on your glove faces the target at impact, it's basically the same thing, just two different ways to think about it.

The farther your hands are ahead of the ball, the club face slightly opens. Take your normal stance and then press your hands up further towards your left side. You will the see the club face opening a little. A proper release will put the face square at impact. You probably are rotating your arms through.

I would agree with that. I have noticed that as well. I just didn't figure adjusting my swing for less shaft lean at impact was the solution.

What do you mean by "You probably are rotating your arms through"?

My thoughts are that rotating my arms through would make my release better(square face). Or is that what you meant? That is the feel I've been trying to get, "right hand on top of left hand" is just a way for me to envision it.

Yes that was a typo. I meant you probably aren't rotating your arms through. Your thoughts are perfect there. Start by doing a lot of pitch shots. set the wrists early and hold the angle and just rotate the forearms to square the club with your hands out in front. Never let the right hand get under the shaft.

Thanks for the tips. It's nice to know I'm on the right track. I'm hoping to get some range time in tomorrow. The closest range is a little over 30 miles from here so my practice time is usally limited to once a week which sucks. :( But when I am there it's usally for 3-5 hours which is nice.
