A putter that works for me may not work for you, everyone is different. Your best bet is to go to a local golf store and test ones out from different companies and find one that's a winner for YOU.

Well you can go blade or mallet putter and there are many options depending on your price range.

Buy mine. Just kidding (kinda). If you are looking to find a new putter, you have to find one that has the right set up for you. If you don't feel confident over your putter or you have problems setting up with your putter odds are you won't make your putt.

I like the ones that make the ball go in the hole.

Try them out, and pick the one you like the best... there's too many styles and choices to just take someone else's advice.

You could always try to copy me and throw your putter in a lake and putt with your sand wedge. Putting is no fun anyhow.

I had an Odyssey Crimson 550 Series ($90 - New) and a Black Velvet 110 Gun Metal ($20 - New)... Which one do I putt better with? Black Velvet... Why? cause it fits what I need in a putter... Just today I rolled in a 15 foot left to righter from the fringe with it to save par...

Moral

Buy for feel, what feels the best to you when you putt... Don't buy a putter because of its name... Buy for what helps you make putts...

A putter is a very personal thing so the most important thing (and basically everyone else has already stated) is to find the one you like the look and feel of best and gives you the most confidence as you stand over the ball. There are things to consider, though.

One is alignment. You want a putter that you can easily align to the spot you want to roll the ball over (or into hole). Some people find some of the newer, larger mallets better for this. Personally, I find the 2-ball putters the easiest to align consistently, but several companies make these type of putters. Others find a simple blade such as the Scotty Cameron putters with just a simple dot or line on the head easy to align (I have big trouble aligning these for those 5-10 foot putts).

Another thing to consider is your stroke itself. There are a few different strokes, but for the most part they can be categorized as an 'arced' stroked (aka open-square-closed stroke) or 'square' stroke (aka straight back-straight through stoke). For the straight stroke many find the center-shafted and/or face balanced putters to be easier to execute with. It seems easier to keep the face square through the stroke with this configuration for many people (myself included). For the arced stroke many find a heel-shafted putter easier to execute the stroke with. Some feel a blade makes this stroke easier because they feel they can control the opening and closing of the clubface easier.

Another putter consideration is the shaft design. Personally I prefer a center-shafted putter (blade or mallet) with no offset or plumbers neck. How the shaft connects to the putterhead can have an affect on the roll of the ball as well as alignment. I always found any offset causes me to struggle to get the ball started on the line I want.

Look, sound and feel are possibly more important as anything else. Since this is probably the club you will use the most each round so it's important that you like these factors. I like he look of a mallet, but not a huge, oversized one. For sound and feel (very close to being the same thing), I like the soft feel of the Odyssey White HOt XG face. I have also owned a Scotty mallet and the feel and sound were so different I could not adjust. Some putters will have a soft feel from either an insert (such as Odysseys) or a softer metal (such as Scottys). Other putter may have a much firmer feel. Finding the 'feel' for you is important because putting is more about feel than anything else - it helps you gauge the distances better.

Basically this is just a long-winded way to say "find what you like best", but I often find people do not spend enough time truly considering the differences in putters. The putter that feels and/or looks correct to you in the store might not once you get out on the course so just try to think about what you really want before just hitting a few strokes on carpet at a store (and mysteriously always holing everything).

there are hundreds of putter designs out there, only you can determine what is good for you. You won't let a forum choose a car for you right? Same for a putter, it is too personal of a thing to let someone else pick for you. Once you find the right putter for you, try to ignore it's price wether cheap or expensive (unless you have a budget to adhere to) and get it fitted. Confidence is key to putting. If you don't trust in your putter you will stutter and mess up your putts

also make sure you can stand to look at the putter, you react differently to things you hate looking at.

i just changed my putter... i am a staunch callaway fan, and when it comes to putters and wedges, i go elsewhere...i putted with about 30 different putters, then i picked out 5 i liked, and putted about 50 putts with each until i picked the rife... i used to have a ping karsten piper which i started losing faith in... in my eyes, putters and wedges are the most intimate clubs in the bag... before i make a purchase i certainly do my homework... good luck in your search...

I dunno if your golf course does anything like this, but one thing that was a huge benefit to me was the demo program they have. For 4$ you cant rent any club they have to try, and if you like it, you can buy a new one(not the demo you used) after your round is done, and they take the price of the rentals (if you tried 4 putters before you bought, they take off 16$) off of it.

I tried Yes putters, Camerons, Rossa's, etc etc, and ended up with the one putter that I had never even considered before the pro suggested I try it, a Wilson Staff 8875 mallet. I absolutely loved it. Still do. It gives me a ton of confidence that my Odd. 2Ball putter never, ever gave me, especially when rolling long putts.

Don't overthink it. And don't look at the manufacturer before you try a putter. Swing it and hit a few putts before you look at the name on the grip or the head.

My putter I have now is excellent for me personally. I love the feel and weight shit has you complete your stroke. You should just go to a pro shop or any golf store and test some out yourself, which is how I found mine. My srt is now 99 bucks at dicks, which last year I bought mine for around 200. You may or may not want to check it out.
