Hey guys,

I'm having some weird side spin issues with my driver and my 3 iron all of a sudden. Not with any other clubs.

I hit either one by ball goes perfectly strait for about 180 yards with my 3 iron about 220 yards with my driver and when it hits that point it literately shoots right. The only thing I can think of is that I'm creating excessive side spin.

Its not a fade, its not a slice, like I said perfectly straight then boom goes right.

You guys know of a drill or something that can help me correct this? Driver is 9.5*

That's a slice.

Clubface is open at impact.

A slice doesn't have to start to the left like it does for most people. It can start down the middle or even on the right side.

You clubface is definately open. It's the only way to create sidespin as long as the swingpath is square. Try to see or feel if you are cupping your left wrist. Work on keeping it straight or slightly bowed and keeping the wrist going straight as an extension of the arm.

I would add that having the feeling of the logo of your glove(if you wear one) pointing toward the target at impact is a good way to think of it.

Ok, hmm it all happend when I slowed my swing down I'm going to have to pay attention to what I'm doing I guess.

Thanks for the replies

Ok, hmm

It's funny you say that. I'm reading one of Hank Haney's books, and he makes an observation about slowing your swing down that really caught my attention. He said something like "if you take a fast, lousy swing and slow it down, all you have is a slow, lousy swing". I'm by no means calling your swing lousy, I just thought it was a really interesting take on it because you hear so many people say to slow it down some.

I know this isnt a lot of help, I just wanted to throw it out there since I just read it this past weekend. Like everyone said, the clubface is slightly open on impact, but the real question is why is it open? Maybe tee the ball just slightly more forward in your stance, or address it just slightly closer to you than before. That will almost force you to come a little more inside. If at that point the ball starts left, but still tails right, loosen your grip a tiny bit. Now that I think about it, I wouldnt think that you'd be gripping tighter with your slower swing than you would with your faster swing.

I've always been ass backwards.

I did drive better yesterday, I put the ball farther forward in my stance. I've always had a really slow back swing and a really fast forward swing. So I my mind and my body are having trouble adjusting I think. I have a very smooth transition from back to forward, no jerky/twisting movements. My grip is also pretty light, I'm wondering if my hips are getting ahead of my arms.

I'm trying new stuff out to try and hit more fairways, yesterday I hit 6/7 and I was pretty happy. But that isnt the norm, I want to make it the norm so I'm trying different things.

Sounds like things went really well yesterday then! Out of curiosity, what were you doing differently yesterday? And how much further forward were you teeing the ball?

And I'd say if the problem keeps up, and your grip is light and unrestrictive, my next step would be video. From what you described, everything sounds really good, so I'd hate to give you any bogus info from here.

grr, this is getting old. Played last night horrible driving. I literly almost killed a guy.

ball is just forward of my left heel, I started standing up straighter, feet just shoulder width apart. Slow back, power through. Now Im not slicing, but Im pushing the ball right perfectly straight.

I have no idea. I need to get a video of my swing. But the only one i have is on my phone, other one isnt digital. The other problem with that is when Im at the driving range everything is perfect, if you looked at my game at the driving range you would think I was a scratch or better player lol doesn't translate to the course....

So when things started going sour last night, I closed the club face at address, thinking band-aid fix, nope. Just made it worse I couldn't predict where the ball way going.

If you're pushing it right you've got an in to out swing and come down with an open clubface. Could be because of a bad grip or possibly cupping the left wrist.

There is no doubt the the face was open causeing the str8 then turn right ball. Then the push stright right might be an in to out or your getting your body out in front and blocking yourself.

IMO, I would check alignment, and take-a-way, Limit your back swing (don't over turn) and release through the ball. Your body turn and dropping your hands into the swing should be together.

If the wrist is the culprit you can put a pen betwen your watch and glove to see if you are cupping it... Good Luck I've been there too.

    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.

    • I have been on a roll in November. Today was a 77 (69.2/115, 6,050 yards) on a wet course with dew covered bumpy greens. Better greens and I might have shaved a few more strokes off the score.
