Hello all,

is there any way of removing the old tape from your club that will not take 2 hours?

I have seen on youtube several videos that tell you to heat the tape, but boy, that doesn´t work at least for the 3 tapes i have removed so far.

I end up putting the club inside a bucket full with water and soap, and then i let the tape to soften; many minutes later i am able to remove it, but not without a lot of work and bad words in my mind.

Isn´t there a better method?

Thank you all in advance.

Sounds like you have some pretty old tape there...

Go under your kitchen sink and get one of those sponges that has the green "scrubby" side. Spray the old tape with solvent, let it soak in a few minutes. You should be able to rub the old tape off as if you were erasing it.

Another method is to use a razor blade and carefully whittle the tape off. It should come off like a carrot peel.

If it's really bad, you can combine both methods, peeling first, then erasing.

Don't let the new tape get that old.... Good luck.

Citrus cleaner, label off, tape remover or something like that works great. It's liquid and loosen the old tape and glue quick and easy. I use that stuff when removing any old sticker, label, or something else that has glue on it.

You should find it at a hardware store. I've seen bottles that looks like house cleaning supplies, not sure if that's the same stuff. I've seen it on spray cans and bottles.

For steel shafts, I use a razor blade. Quick and easy. It doesn't have to be perfect, just good enough that the next layer of tape dosen't build on top of the previous layer and change the overall thickness of your grips.

For graphite shafts, I usually just use mineral spirits, but the label remover products that Zeph mentioned work well too.

There is a grip removal tool that places sell. I have seen it in the Golfworks catalog and I have one that my Dad gave me. The thing works great.

Recently watched the guys at Golfsmith regripping clubs for me. They used a curved scraper like the one mentioned above. They did not use a 'label remover' fluid. Just scraped what looked to be about 98% of the old stuff off, then put on the new tape and go from there. I was surprised at the speed of the entire operation: starting with removing the old grip, it was no more than about one minute until he handed me the club with the new grip in place. They will do one or two while you wait. The regripping charge was about $3.00 per club if I buy the grip in the store.
