I just got some new (to me) clubs since I'm just getting back into golf. I have a Driver, 3 Wood, 5 Wood, 3 - PW & SW right now. I will be buying a putter soon. That will have me at 13 clubs. I know the standard rules allow 14 clubs so I was curious what most people use as their 14th club. Chipper? Lob Wedge? Gap Wedge? 2 Iron? 7 Wood? Rescue Wood? What is the most popular and why?

i always preferred a 60* wedge over anything else.

There isn't a rule that requires you to carry 14 clubs at all times. I think a GW will fit in nicely. If you wanted a hybrid it may replace your 5 wood and 3 iron at the same time. You could also get another hybrid to replace the 4 iron as well.

I can't imagine plaing without my 60*. I dumped the 5w in foavro fo the 3h and it allowed me to carry 4 wedges.

I guess I would start with a lob wedge. Then I would see what the difference in yardage is between the 5w and 3I. If it is more than 20 yards, you might look at dropping the 5W and getting a 2H. Heck, depending on how well you hit your 3I, you might even look at dropping the 5W and 3I, and simply getting 2H or 3H, and adding a gap wedge.

Not sure why several people are recommending a lob wedge. It's a difficult club to hit and most high handicappers will play better without it - at least until they become pretty consistent with other wedges. For now a gap wedge would probably make the most sense. I'm not sure what the loft is on your PW, but I would imagine it's somewhere between 45-47*, which leaves a pretty good gap to most sand wedges (usually around 56*). I know for the last 7-8 years my 'gap' wedge has been my most used club for abouty 100 yards and in. I would also highly recommend a hybrid or 2 (or three, ...). You should definitely consider replacing your 3 and 4 irons with a hybrid or 2 (one 4H might be find for replacing both clubs since they tend to be a little longer than the iron they are made to replace). The 5W is probably a good club to keep as it can make a good alternate driver. If you drop a long iron then maybe you can consider a lob wedge, but I really do not think it's the best alternative.

If you have trouble using the SW off the turf, a 56/58º wedge, perhaps put in a 52º wedge or some hybrid. Replacing longer irons with hybrids is also a good idea.

From the sound of your 13 clubs it sounds like you have nothing to use out of the bunkers. I would not recommend a lob wedge - they can be hard to hit unless you have good technique. You say you have a pitching wedge? HOw far do you hit it?? To me - the obvious choice for you -ASSUMING - you don't want to change anything else in your bag, is a SANDWEDGE - I would think a 56 degree sandwedge (traditional sandwedge loft) with a high bounce (13 or 14) would be a really good tool for you to have and grow with
just my 2 cents

He says he's got a SW already. If that's something that came with the iron set, I might have thought of changing it with another wedge to make it easier off the turf and grassy lies. SWs in iron sets typically have a large cavity compared to dedicated wedges, making them hard to use in the rough or from hard bunkers.

oh whoops - sorry my bad for not reading closely enough. I really agree with the last poster - if that Sandwedge you have is one of the huge clunky ones that comes with a set- get rid of it asap - obvious reasons stated by Zeph above. the give you zero feedback on anything

I only carry 13 myself. I plan to add a 60* back in, but the last one I had didn't like me very much.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
