Anyone else hear VJ may have hit a 7 wood today?

At Congressional today, Faldo said something about maybe VJ hitting a 7 wood from 197 yards out, then went on to extol the virtues (and differences) of high lofted woods like 5 and 7 woods compared to hybrids. VJ hit it pretty close too. Then later he said something about Tiger maybe hitting a 5 wood for a tee shot (fairway ended at 280 yards.) Faldo also talked about having many woods himself, only 2 degrees apart and choosing which of them based on the course played. I did not catch it all.

Anyway, I hit a 5 wood and 7 wood better than I can a hybrid because they go higher and stop more quickly, even if the hybrid and wood have the same loft -- The high woods land more like a high six and seven iron and stay on firm greens better for me.

I still believe hybrids are great for most golfers, but if you have a pretty high swing speed and no trouble hitting woods, then who knows. All I know for sure is my old 1 iron will never see my bag again.

I remember seeing VJ, on the GC, saying that the 7w was one of his favorite clubs.

Play whatever clubs you play the best with IMO.

Would you rather hit a 1 iron 240 down the fairway one out of 4 times or would you rather pull out an equivelant wood and hit it in the fairway 2 out of 4 times?

I've never understood the "my ego won't let me hit one". Isn't your ego gonna be hurtin when you mishit than 1 iron 75% of the time?

I am not directing this towards you RC, just saying.

That's good because he doesn't use a 1 iron.

All I know for sure is my old 1 iron will never see my bag again.

I think he has had that club (or at least a similar club) for several years. I remember watching a tournament on TV with a friend of mine and we still laugh about it to this day. Feherty made a comment about a shot VJ hit with a '9-wood, bent to a 7-wood, that plays like a 5-wood'.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I suppose it depends on how you use the club.

The hybrid for me often sees use from the tee. If I want to hit it high on a long par three, I can tee it up and really get the ball in the air. I can do the same thing (playing a cut) with a hybrid into the green if the distance is good. But a 5-wood or a 7-wood, I can't quite knock them down when I need to play them from the tee. Not nearly as easily as I can throw a hybrid up higher in the air when I need to.

That is true... knocking down a 7 wood is not an easy matter. But I have carried one for 12 or more years and have learned several ways to use mine, including a variation of the open faced slicing zinger. It is funny looking, but a good rescue shot from 170 to 190 out when you need to bend it hard around a tree. Hybrids are much easier to work and I have one and have used it, but I still go back to my old trusty 7 wood... it is a matter of confidence and history.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
