Changing Par Mid-Tournament

The USGA announced they might make some par changes, mid-tournament, at Chambers Bay in a few years. http://www.pgatour.com/2009/r/07/07/notes.ap/index.html

I actually like this idea: the hole, according to them, makes a good par-4 and a good par-5. So it isn't unreasonable to allow it to play as both during the tournament.


Interestingly, they're also changing the par around Congressional for that Open, but it's holes 6 and 16 they're thinking of changing. I guess a certain someone can't lobby to make 11 a par-5.

Interesting, but for a gross score tournament, who cares what par is? I don't think any of those guys play a hole differently according to its par...

It's sort of a mental thing, though. GIR, 1 under vs par, par vs bogey, etc.

I'd have thought that most pros would be focused enough to get over that and play according to its layout. I suppose for stats purposes the GIR increase could be important.
