I stumbled upon something that probably doubles the purity of my putting stroke. When I grip the putter with both thumbs pointing down the shaft, I apply a slight pressure to simultaneously weaken my right hand grip and strengthen my left hand grip. The hands don't move, of course, because they are in the way of each other. But this seems to engage the right muscles to keep the wrists incredibly still during the stroke. Does anyone else do this, or did I discover the holy grail of putting?

Haha I just started doing this a week and a half ago, and it has helped tremendously.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

It wouldnt work for me. But if its working for you right now, great. Putting is an individual thing, anyway. I have to keep the grip pressure in both my hands the same or the face will open or close depending on which hand is stronger. I do grip the putter thumbs down, though.

Wait, isn't that what TC is walking about, because that's what I do. My hands are separated, but the thumbs are going down the shaft.

I thought he was talking about applying more grip pressure to one hand.

No. The grip pressure should still be the same. The only difference you are applying is this:

1. Take your normal putting grip (I am assuming a traditional grip with both thumbs down the shaft and the left index finger on top of the right hand fingers). 2. Try to gently twist your left hand clockwise and your right hand counter-clockwise. Note that the pressure of the "twist" should be the same for each hand. You should feel the shaft pulling against the skin on your fingers where you are holding it, but the hands shouldn't move. The key is that by engaging the muscles that rotate the forearm, it is extremely difficult for the wrists to break. Also, since you are applying force already, you don't have to worry that you will yip the putter right before impact from some random application of force from your forearms. Don't worry about getting the pressure equal. Your brain knows how to do this automatically. I mean, have you ever seen someone clapping in an auditorium and their right hand keeps overpowering their left? That would be one very special dude indeed...

Oh! I see where the confusion is. When I say "strengthen the left hand", I mean strong as in a "strong grip". Not more pressure. Same with the right hand. I really mean try to rotate it counter-clockwise like you would for a flop or bunker shot where you are trying to keep from closing the clubface down.
