i am sure this varies from city to city (i live in halifax, nova scotia) but does anyone have any advice on finding a field one could hit balls in? just to bat around, and work on a swing. $10 a session at the range plus green fees and extras get's expensive fast.

well you have to think about the cost of hitting balls in a field as opposed to paying range fees...
you'd have to buy your own balls... and if the field is just a big grassy space... i dont think it would be groomed at all... so expect to lose a bunch of balls... which means you'd have to buy more balls...
you also have to factor time into the equation... the time you spend retrieving balls you hit all over the place...
it would really suck hitting driver knowing you have to go out a few hundred yards and pick up the balls you hit...
heck the only club id hit in a field would probably be my wedges so i wouldnt have to walk so far to find my balls if i could find them at all...
in my mind... id rather chip in my backyard instead of a field... and id much rather spend money on a range where someone else is collecting the balls and all i have to do is hit them

I go to the Neighborhood baseball field and take the garbage can from the dugout and put it on the pitchers mound. Then I go to the outfield at the distance I want to work on and bring my shag bag and WA-LA I have a practice session and since the infield is not grass but dirt it is easy to collect and rehit the balls.

That's great if all you want to hit is your pitching wedge.

And that's not sarcasm. It really is great. But... you can only hit about a pitching wedge or less. 400 feet is only 133 yards, and that's if you hit from home to straightaway center. And most neighborhood baseball fields aren't anywhere near that deep. So there's that.

Look for soccer complex. There's one near me that has about 10 fields. You have tons of room to hit a driver. I keep of bucket of shag balls and you'd be surprised how fast it'll grow if you keep random balls you find.

Usually fields are around schools of some type. That or sometimes there's openings in the tree coverage out in the reaches of a park somewhere, but you might have to walk a little to find them.

There's a field by this school within walking distance from where I live. I hit balls there all the time. Heck, most of my major swing issues and improvements have been worked out there. I can hit anything up to about a 6 iron. I even hit into this little abandoned volleyball area that has all grown in with grass that serves as my pseudo-green. The only downside is the lies aren't the best, but usually you can make due and find a suitable spot. Very peaceful actually to find a field like that to practice in.

What I do is only practice my wedge shot before playing with shots of no more than 50 yards, this makes you focus on your take away and your hitting zone.

Today, I was checking out clubs at the local golf store and hit balls into a net trying different clubs. I was impressed with the Mizuno mp30 irons.

You will be suprised how much you can improve you swing with just working on your pitch shots of under 50 yards.

Hope you're doing your best not to make divots because as a former baseball player who has sprained an ankle from stepping in a divot in the outfield, I don't appreciate a baseball field being torn up.
