My dad has just informed me that he (surprisingly) ordered me a Callaway X-Tour Chrome Wedge, which he could get for free through his company (they have a 'perks plus points' system, which if he meets/exceeds his quota, the more points he gets. He went on there and saw he had a ton of points) so he got me the Callaway 56 degree wedge. I've felt it in the stores, felt nice, and had mentioned that my wedge (only a year old, but with me playing everyday and with as many range balls as I usually hit with it, I must strike the ball with it chipping, pitching, and full shot wise 100 times per day) was getting really worn...so he got me this club, should be here in a week or two, but never having used it, I'm not sure what it's like.

It isn't the C-Grind, it is this one: http://www.golfsmith.com/products/CA...Wedge_-_Chrome

It certainly looks great, I've hit the C-Grind ones, so is it much different from those? Anyone using it out there and how does it play compared to the other top brands like Titleist, Cleveland, Ping, Nike, etc.?

I have it. It's nice, and has a lot of spin. But it's also semi-hard-to-hit. Maybe that's because I'm a 14 handicap, but I don't really like having a wedge that's even slightly hard to hit. If your getting it for free than yeah, I'd definitely take it. But it took me a couple rounds to get used to. Overall, I like my Vokey more.

How is it harder to hit than any other wedge? Maybe it was too little or too much bounce you had on yours? What was your setup (loft and bounce)?

It was a 58*/11* wedge. To be honest, I don't know why it was harder to hit than my Vokey. I think I know why. When I got it, I was a high handicapper, and just flat out sucked. I'll probably put it back in my bag for some more spin.

I just got one in a 58/11 it has way more spin than my vokey did but the only downside is it shreds golf balls.

Oh, well I don't care about that if it performs. Sounds like it lives up to it's name, so I'm excited to get it.

I owned and used a Callaway X-Tour 56 just like you are getting. It had 13 degrees of bounce. I had good luck with it. It doesn't have the MD grooves on it like the 58 and 60 degree X-Tours did, so it won't spin the ball as much, and it should also be easier on golf balls than either the 58 or 60. I didn't find it that much harder to use than the Vokey Spin Milled wedges to tell you the truth, and the grooves and face held up MUCH better than the Spin Milled. The spin of the Vokey wedges all but disappeared after a month or so of playing and a pretty good amount of practice. The X-Tours held much much better. The X-Tours are a little less forgiving than the Cleveland CG12 and CG14, but the face and grooves will hold up a LOT better than the Cleveland wedges. Nice club. Spend a few hours practicing with it to get a feel for it.

I have a 56 x-tour vintage and I love it. Good bite on the ball, good feel, and a nice swingweight to it.

I played them for a good while and enjoyed them. I swapped over to Cleveland and prefer the Cleveland's. But definitely nothing wrong with the Callaways.

The MD grooves are amazing. Spin from 15 yards. Makes me look like a pro. I don't know which one I like more. I have 3 brands. But I definitely think it is a nice wedge.

Thanks for the little review. It sounds like it will work pretty well for me. I don't really need forgiveness on my wedges because since I practice and play so much, I don't really mishit them often besides the occassional shank off the hosel when I take a full swing.

Thanks for everyones opinions and reviews. I ordered the club just a little over a week ago and it still hasn't come yet. I'm getting impatient! But, I guess when you get something for free, you can't expect top-notch service, can you?

do you have an update yet on this?
did you receive it and how did it perform?

Thanks for asking man, but...

No, I did not recieve. I e-mailed the company and they say golf clubs typically take 4-6 weeks. I was pretty mad at first, but it was free so I can't expect much - they have to order it from Callaway, and then ship it to me from their company, so I can understand how it can take a while.

I didn't realize it was going to take so long...Probably won't see it til Mid-August.

I play a Callaway X-Forged 56.14, and really like it. Question: Most X-Tour wedges have pretty high bounces (10* +). Do they ever feel klunky?

I just dumped an X20 AW (50.11), and I just never could hit it clean - lots of distance variation. It had a really thick sole, so maybe that increased the "actual bounce" of the club. On early shots with my CG14, I'm much more accurate.

My 56.14 is OK with high bounce because I use mainly for bunkers and cut shots out of greenside rough.

Do the X-Tours ever feel klunky from higher bounce?

Focus, connect and follow through!

I don't know what golf shops you have around you but here we have a Roger Dunn that will let you trade in a brand new club you have won or purchased someplace else for the retail value that they would sell it for. With that I'd go and get a Vokey. I've played Callaway wedges including the X series and nothing compares to a Vokey.

    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
    • Day 580 - 2026-05-04 Played eight holes. Sometimes golf kicks you in the nuts. 😉
    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
