Well, I am in the market for some irons. Currently I have some very forgiving, hacker irons I call them. (TM Rac OS2). I hate them haha.

I throw darts with my brothers and fathers thinner irons and am looking for a set of my own.

One of my golf buddies and I narrow down a small list of irons that I should look at and it is as follows:

Callaway X-Forged

Cleveland Reds

Some Mizuno (57 or 60 probably)

So my questions for the board are:
1. Which of the three would you pick (if you pick the mizuno, which model?)
2. Is there a set NOT on the list that I should heavily consider?

Honestly I am pretty set on the X-Forged, but I want to consider all options and opinions before hand so I don't make an expensive mistake.

Thanks!

P.S. I would attempt to get the Project X 6.0 Shafts in these, whether they are the flighted shafts or not, I don't know enough about them to make that decision at this time.

So my questions for the board are:

1. Unless you want blades, Mizuno MP-52, 57, or 60 should be considered, probably in that order. Be sure to get fitted - Mizuno does this for free, and charges nothing different for special orders (unless you decide to get premium shafts), so there's no excuse for NOT doing this if you get Mizuno.

2. Yes. You should go to demo days over the next month or so and hit the irons you're considering, plus any other company's set of so-called players' irons. Ping i10 (and soon, i15), Bridgestone J36, and Nike VR Split Cavity should warrant some attention. Whether any given set of players' irons is better or worse than any other one is debatable, so it's a matter of feel and pleasingness to your eye.

According to your HC, your pretty damn good. Why do you hit the X-18/X-22 over say the X-Forged?

Aren't the X-Forged more of a players type club?

Ya know ive hit them at the range and at golf galaxy just to tell the difference, but i just cant find any difference in them. Im good with the tours, really good but when it comes down to which ones i am more consistent with, it all comes down to the 18's. call me crazy, call me weird, but it might just be a mental thing to where im just more confident with those sets.

When my dad had those TM RAC OS2 irons my family used to call 'em "shovels." Those things were huge, but boy could I blast those things...They ballooned in the air whenever I hit them though.

Sounds pretty accurate, especially the ballooning part.

For what it's worth, if I could have any irons I'd get the X-Forged with Project X 6.5.

I'd consider the ZM Forged or MP 67's, too, but the X-Forged seem every so slightly more forgiving while still having all the benefits of a true blade.

I only hit the X-Forged once, but I didn't feel like they were nearly as forgiving as the X-18's or 20's. I understand forgiveness isn't your main concern, but I'm a bit more of the theory that almost everyone who isn't a scratch golfer should avoid blades. The X-Forged aren't blades, but they're getting close, forgiveness-wise. I probably would suggest whichever Mizuno you felt most comfortable with, out of that list. Off of that list, I'd take a good hard look at the X-18's, X-20's or maybe the new TM burner or r7 irons. The Mizuno's would be your best bet, IMO. They make very high performance irons for a large variety of golfers.

Do you swing fast for those 6.5? or you just like the lower flight?

I swing pretty fast but there are plenty of people who hit it further than me. My 7 iron goes 170 on average, for reference. Also, I'm a pretty big guy at 6'1 and 220 lbs, so I like a club to have some weight to it in my hands. I hate the feel of a floppy shaft.

I've always liked stiffer and heavier shafts for a few reasons. It feels like I can control them better, my natural flight is fairly high anyway, and also I plan on getting better over time. I've only been playing four years and I think it's likely that my swing speed will continue to increase over time. I don't want to be stuck wishing I had opted for stiffer irons in the first place.

Lastly, they work fine. I take a lot of 3/4 swings for knockdown shots and they still flex fine and get plenty of air even with those lower swing speeds. When I get new irons, I want to even check out 7.0's, to be honest. I think a lot of people are more hesitant than they need to be about stiffer flexes.
