Getting paired with obliviots...

Teed off this morning with a friend of mine at 7:00 AM, we got paired with a couple of nice guys but they were golf obliviots (oblivious idiots)... I don't care what your handicap is, everyone can exhibit good golf course etiquette... I have never seen someone "mark" their golf ball on the green by stepping on the ball and using the ball's indentation as their ball mark... after I saw this I went up to the guy and gave him a couple of pennies and told him "here, you can use these instead of making a pitch mark in the green"... then I fixed the ball mark he made on the green... he stepped in my line, my friend's line, and his friend's line... just amazing that someone has that little knowledge of the etiquette of the game... I finally went up to him and quietly explained that he needed to watch where he was walking on the green... it wouldn't be that big of a deal if we were playing on tiff or mini-verde greens, but these were bent grass greens in Texas in the summer and they are very soft... he said he had played golf for several years but that it had been a while since he had played a round of golf... I wasn't trying to be a jackass but if I don't say something to the guy who will?

That sucks. It's good you said something. If you don't say something to people like that it only adds fuel to the fire and ensures the behavior will continue. Not everyone would step up like you did, good for you.

... I don't ever want to get in someone's business on the golf course, I'm out there to have fun, it just amazed me that this poor guy didn't know etiquette... He did thank me for the pennies and was a friendly guy... If I inadvertently break a rule I would hope that someone would say something to me so I can learn and not do it again.

greens were nothing but footprints.

My favorite are guys who when you ask them to move their mark "one to the right" lay down their entire putter (instead of just one putter head) and move the ball 3 feet to the right.

some people just dont know. i had to teach a guy i play with all the etiquette. he had no idea about walking on someones line, etc. everyone has to learn eventually. its good that you told him about those things

Sometimes people know better but just forgot. I have on occasion noticed my shadow is on someone line. I also play ot of turn allot. I like the round to keep moving so I am first to my ball and no one is near theirs (I often am as I carry) I hit.

Nothing wrong with "ready golf"....at least in my book. We play that way alot.

Or what about playing with someone who can shoot in the 70s, with some "gimmes", but can obviously play.....but stands over you with the flag while your putting and actually takes a step to the hole before you finish your stroke.....hits 3 footers back to you without asking, and stands behind the hole in your vision as you are putting downhill for birdie on 18 after a good round (for you)??? And then "smirks" when you ask him to move....twice!!!!

Some people don't get "general" ettiquitte.....not talking "golf rules nazi" over here....just basic, don't make noise when I'm on deck and walk in line or hover too close......jeeez!

I've been spoken to about doing this... but I still think that if you are ready, and the other player isn't, and you're not playing a match, you should play your shot. It just makes sense.

LOL! Thankfully he was not... I don't think the course would have let him play in a half-shirt and jorts

... The course we played today is a nice public course with bent grass greens... Bent grass and Texas heat isn't the best match so the greens are syringed quite a bit and are very soft... That was the problem with guy walking in our lines... Normally it's not a big deal but dude's size 12's were making big footprints in the green... I have no problem with playing ready golf, actually enjoy it... If someone is ready to hit and the person who has honors or is away isn't ready by all means go ahead and hit, keep things moving...

Sorry but I would have told him he was an idiot and told him to wait on the next tee untill I was out of range. Why do courses in the US and Europe (it dosnt happen in the UK) insist on making up 4 balls ?

In this country, you may get your ass kicked. If I remember the posts correctly the guy had a 12 inch shoe size, so Im guessing he could inflict some damage. If your at a muni course you never know who might be paired with you. 2weeks ago i was paired with 3pagan bikers.

They were nice guys but I wouldnt be the one to tell them their idiots, its not worth a confrontation.

Forgive me but im new to the game, whenever i move a mark i use the putter length and keep the line with a distant object. Why take a chance using the blade length and having the ball hit your mark anyway?

If it's really that close, move it two putter blades. It'd have to be an awfully bad putt to hit a mark two putter blades out of the way - and if it's that bad, they might be happy to hit your mark as it might push it a little further back online.

Don't use the whole putter. Just use the blade, once or twice.
