What's would be a difference in these? Anyone else play a strong three wood, or is it pretty much useless unless the course I'm playing is really long?

There's a big difference. It's much much easier to control/hit solid a 15 degree 3 wood oppose to a 12.5 degree 3 wood. I don't even know many pro's who would play a 3 wood with that low of loft, to be honest with you.

I'm honest, I rarely have success with it off the deck, but off the tee where I can't hit a 280 drive, I can use this knowing I can get it out there a good 235 240. I'd like to get a 15 or 16 degree club, either a 3 wood or a 1/2 hybrid, but haven't found any I find to be worth it.

I was given one, gratis, an Adams Tight lies 13 degree 3-wood firm.

I've gotten it out to about 230 ish. It's a nice club and when hit right can produce a whole variety of interesting shots, long, short, high, low, left, right, and all kinds of curves. In fact some of the sweetest shots I've ever seen, and it feels nice doing it.

But that's also my problem.
I can do all of the above, but not as often intentionally as I would like. I can't seem to get my swing on it as controlled as it needs to be to use regularly on the course in too many situations.

I only use it on days when I'm swinging it well on the range beforehand. Otherwise I attempt to lay up with a 4-iron or 5-iron if the desired landing area is too small.

I'd replace with a 3-hybrid if I could swing it, but for now, I'm trying to work my 3 iron back into the bag.

I think a ton of pros play 13* 3 woods-and I think the ease of hitting one has a lot do with the design of the club and how it fits your swing. I'm no great golfer, but there are certain 12-13* fairway woods and hybrids I hit with ease, and other 15* clubs I'm not comfortable with.

12.5 is a crazy 3-wood.

I use a 15 degree 3 because it's easy to hit and carries well. 12.5 is closer to a 2-wood, I think. Some drivers come in 11 degrees.

I carry a 13 degree 3 wood and have no problem with it off the tee or off the deck. Great club for me to have in the bag when the I'm not not driving the ball well or looking down a tight fairway.

Sometimes I only carry a 12.5° fairway wood (a Titleist 975F pro- trajectory). At my own course that is short and tight, it often performs better for me off the tee than driver. I have no problem hitting it from the fairway (I tend to hit quite a high ball anyway). This frees me up to carry two hybrids (17° and 20°) and three additional wedges, along with my 4-PW irons.

It's my short, tight, course club set.

My general course set is 10.5° driver (Titleist 975D) and 14.5° 3 wood (Titleist 975D), 3-PW, and two additional wedges.with a 2 Hybrid or three wedges - but I do have a 8.5° driver and will experiment using that with my 12.5° 975F in the furture. Currently I can't hit the 8.5° 975D well enough though.

I really don't see why anyone shouldn't be able to hit a 12.5° fairway wood from a good lie if the shaft isn't too long. Try it, it might work for you.

I have tried a 13º, but with a 10.5º driver, the distance is almost the same, and it's not as accurate as the 15º. There are a few degrees difference, to me it didn't play a huge role. I'd rather be in the fairway more often than rough and have a 7i than 8i.

Exactly what I was going to say.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

For those that strike the ball well, a strong 3 wood is a great option to consider. I have one that I play when conditions favor a higher run to carry ratio.......firmer fairways, high winds, etc. As with any club, less loft means any sidespin will be accentuated. For those that tend to slice or hook, that's not necessarily a good thing.

I prefer a shallow face in my 3 wood and especially so in the stronger club.

I was given one, gratis, an Adams Tight lies 13 degree 3-wood firm.

I spent some quality time with it today, and made a stance and swing modification. (All shots were off the mat, as there was no tee in the mat.) The club seems to work best off the deck -- I guess that's why they call it "tight lies" (Duh!). Turned the left foot out a 1/4 turn (per Hogan), kept right foot more square -- to counteract my tendency to turn that out a little. And made a more conscious effort to keep the left arm in better contact/or at least closer proximity with the chest during the downswing. Suddenly the ball was going pretty much where I intended it, on a much more frequent basis. 13 deg 3-wood back in the bag, and now back to being a favorite again. Like I said above, the club can produce some of the most spectacular shots. Favorite shot of the day was a 10 foot high frozen rope into a 20 mph headwind that rolled out to about 220. It's hard to fathom how a shot that low doesn't just drop after 100, but keeps on going a few feet above the ground like some kind of guided missile. (I'm guessing by this thread that I'm by no means the only one who's had that experience.)

Don't be hating? Lmao dude my point was that a 20 handicap should not play a 12.5 degree 3 wood, it's unnecessary.

A 12.5* fairway could be only a couple degrees higher than some drivers. So it's almost like your hitting a small-headed driver.

Nothing wrong with small headed drivers. i prefer them (hence my choice of fairway/driving clubs). Personally I think a big head feels like a parachute on a stick, and it disrupts my rhythm in the swing. I use the 12.5 975F as a driver, when it's in my bag. The shorter shaft makes for more consistent ball striking (a problem I particularly have with modern length drivers)...but interestingly I have no problem hitting it from the fairway (I have a quickish swing, and hit the ball up in the air perhaps more than I should).

Not all golfers are the same, nor are all high handicappers. With a bigger club head I tend to be further away from the sweet spot and more inconsistent (the extra size of the face seems to give me more scope to mishit, with a smaller face I seem to be able to focus better on striking within a tighter area on the clubface). I used to hit a tiny headed taylor made tour spoon instead of driver, but I didn't hit that one so well off the deck. with the 12.5 975D I have the best of both worlds - and I hit it longer than the members of our clubs average drive off the tee.

    • Played several holes today with my Buddy's left haded clubs.  I was going to order just woods, but after playing again today and hitting the irons well, I will be ordering a complet set of Left handed Clubs.    They are Callaway Edge, Regular flex.  I am excited !  Will let you know after I try them and let you know how well they performed.    Retired Old Man, Terry
    • Depends in part on what lie the greens crew left me. If it's first cut of rough or fairway and clear shot to cup, it's an 8i chip and run. If it's shaggy, or I have to go over ridge or bunker, it's a cut shot with a 58* LW.
    • Throw a stick down in almost every range session.
    • Day 358: Played 18. Incredible psycho scorecard but finished +5. Also completed the birdie challenge. And the no 6s challenge, for that matter. Was not my best ball striking or driving round, but was able to hit enough good shots to make a few birdies and scrape it around.
    • Birdied 10 and 17 today to complete the (away) challenge! Both of the birdies were tap in birdies on par 5s (hit the green in 2 and was in the fringe pin high in 2), but I was a little nervous over both putts. I wasn't taking a gimme to finish the challenge, dammit.  Also, 17 was a hole I missed last year, so it was one I was a little worried about. Now I guess I need to make an eagle or two or get to -19 or lower.
