Went to Vans ••••••••• yesterday.

I purchased a Jesse Ortiz designed bobby jones hybrid to replace my 5 wood. I wasnt satisfied with my 5 wood from the fairway and found that it was usually too strong going into the dried out greens here in AZ.

I wanted a 19* when I walked in but was disappointed when all I could find was the 21*.

I talked with one of the shop salesman and he told me it was very common to see players with a 21* hybrid and a 3 iron(21* as well).

He explained that the 21* hybrid would be at least 1/2 -1 full club longer then my 3 iron and I would hit it much higher.

I ended up buying it because I figured 2* was probably too little for me to see a difference anyways.

Just curious if anyone thinks he was blowing smoke or being honest? I havent had a chance to test it out but was planning to sneak out to the range tonight or tomorrow.

Very rue... Most stock hybrids have longer shafts than their iron counterparts, are lighter and designned to launch the ball higher. All of thi means that you should hit it further than your 3 iron

If you've watched the In the Bag series on youtube, you'll see many pros take a hybrid and a 3 iron.

Ok. Just got back from the range, this 21* hybrid is defenitely farther and probably twice the height of my 3 iron. I am very very pleased with this choice. Just thought I would share this information with anyone who is interested.

It is common for the hybrids of the same loft to be longer. I've ordered a 23º hybrid to replace my 21º 3i. I love the high ball flight to make it easier to hang onto a green.

I carry a 20º and 23º which allows me to drop the 3 and 4 iron. Only downside is if the greens and fairways are hard I may need a 4-iron since the 23º will go in too hot even if choked up.

I carry a 4H and a 4i. I hit the 4H about 230 and my 4i about 215.

I know a guy that carries a Jesse ortiz 21 degree hybrid and a 3i. He uses the 21 as his 2iron. He really crushes the ball and uses that loft more for trajectory reasons.

I started out with a 21* hybrid replacing my 3I. I have since added a 18* to replace a 5W, a 24* to replace my 4I, and just ordered a 15* which will replace my 3W. I hit the hybrids much more solidly and consistently than either the irons or fairway woods they have taken the place of. The hybrids do hit the ball longer and higher than the irons they replaced, still leaving me with a gap between my 5I and my 24* hybrid. :)

Maybe I'll be doing this change too. I only have a 4 iron and then the 21° hybrid, so there is a huge gap between them, so I'm planning to get a 3 iron to cover that gap and take out the 17° hybrid.

Cheers!
