Tips for what? Tryouts for what?

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

Spend about 8-10 out of the next 14 days at the driving range.

Hitting about 75 balls at least each time there. You'll see a huge improvement in your ballstriking.

Mix that in with an hour of chipping/putting practice.

And play about 2-3 rounds of golf.

Then you'll be good to go.

I don't know about your coaches, but at my first highschool tryout the coach was not impressed with my then natural draw. He asked me "So what if you need to hit it straight or need a fade?" At the time I couldn't really control my shot shape like I can now so when he asked me to hit it straight or fade it I pretty much failed.

So if i were you i would work on your shot shape control :)

If your handicap is 10 there probably isn't a highschool team you won't make. But then again, a lot of these kids now have been playing for years and are near scratch or low handicap golfers by highschool. But not usually.

so, just play.

haha this reminds me of my high school golf tryouts. Everyone on the team shot par most of the time, except for the occasional one or two under. urgh i didn't have a chance at making the team.

but yeah, your team probably won't be as hard to make. just pick up your frequency of play i.e. range, chipping, putting practice and play a few rounds as CG031 said.

I would practice a lot, but don't the 3 or 4 days before the tryouts. You don't want to go in thinking about your swing. Those days just go out and play.

Make sure you play the course that you are going to play at during tryouts adn practice shots that you will need there. ie if it calls for a lot of drivers, practice those, and ifthe par 3's are long, work on long irons. Also make sure you have a feel for the speed and firmness of the greens.

Exactly. I got tryouts two weeks from now too and this is what I'm doing to prepare. I also go through(if you have time...don't hold anyone up doing this) a hole and if there is a shot that I can play in two different ways I see which one works for me(ie:playing each shot with a different ball and seeing which one gives the lowest score or if they end up being the same, see which one gets you closer to the hole or a better chance)

It depends on what the tryouts are like? Do you just stand there on a driving range and hit balls or do you play or what the criteria is?

I'm a huge advocate of practice how you play, Hit your driver then hit a random wedge/iron and repeat with all of your irons and wedges. I imagine I'm really playing when Im at the driving range trying to hit fairways/greens. I'll even put hazards in places and avoid them.

Then I would practice the hell out of chipping and putting. If its anything like my high school was 5 handicap was almost unheard of most carried a 1-2 handicap. Hence why I didnt play :)

Wow, you guys had some really good golfers at your schools. In my area, a 5 handicap was getting you in no matter what. A 10 probably was. I didn't play but had a friend on our team who wasn't near scratch but did alright. He competed in tournaments too. the top guys were generally around par or over.

Then again, I look at my cousin and his friends who are all seniors and they all probably have handicaps in the the 1-5 range. Damn rich kids and their access!!

Our tryouts went like this:

You show up, you are on the team!

I was our number 1 golfer with about a 10 handicap. That was 15 years ago. Now I probably wouldn't make the team.

Don't feel bad at that, I guarantee if you asked Kenny Perry to do the same he would fail even more, try telling your coach that. Kennys been pretty successful eh?

Kenny can hit a fade when he needs to.
