I am looking to buy a new set of irons and want to get some nice ones since my game is doing pretty well, and i was wondering if you guys have any input as to which irons are the best. Or if they really dont help that much and i should stick with my wilsons (my inner scrooge speaking)

The reason i bring this up is i have been thinking about it for awhile now and i was playing with this kid this morning and he had titleist irons (they were shiny and blades, i'm not really sure the name) and were the prettiest things. like i caught myself just staring at them cuz of how nice they looked. so i want something like that now and want to know the best ones.

In My Bag:
9.5 degree Mizuno MX-500
15 degree Titliest 904F
Mizuno MP-32 3-PW
Cleveland CG10 Black Pearl 52 degree

Short answer you'll probably hate at first: hit a bunch and pick the ones you like.

With a 6 handicap index, you can get away with playing just about anything. So figure out a few things:
1) what you like to look at (at address) - thick topline? thin?
2) how much offset you like on your irons

Well really, that's about it. Figure those two things out and you're well on your way towards narrowing down the potential list.

I like no offset and thin toplines, personally, so I'm limited to things like the Titleist 695MB, the TM RAC MB TP, some Mizunos, etc.

I would strongly encourage you to go to a demo day at a local driving range and pick a six (or seven) iron from about four or five different manufacturers in a set that you think you might like.

Keep your comparison as "apples-to-apples" as possible, (i.e. don't try to compare blades to cavity backs - duhhhh - or mix shaft flexes between different manufacturers).

A good half hour of hitting these "identical" clubs should give you a pretty good idea of which one feels the best and gives you the most desired ball flight. It's fairly safe to assume that "feel" will manifest itself throughout the rest of the set.

That's how I fell in love with my Hogans, and I've never been sorry.

Dunlop DDH 5W Edge CFT Hybrid 3-iron, #3 graphite CFT irons 4 - E wedge, #3 graphite Apex Edge F wedge 60 degree LW Bobby Grace M5K putter Laddie X A3

thehillgolfer,

I'd take a long, hard look at Bridgestone's J33 cavities.

Simply a gorgeous iron with superb performance and enough forgiveness for a six handicap. Looks like a blade from address, has a forgiving sole that dig's just the right amount.

Simply an outstanding set of irons that doesn't get the publicity it deserves.

I'd strongly push Titleist 735CM"s ... its a great combination of forgiveness and workability, the feel is solid and buttery and the looks, well, they can't be beat...

get fitted, get out of the stock Dynamic Gold shafts

DDBowdoin,

DG is the most popular shaft in golf for a reason, because it's an outstanding shaft that fits a wide variety of players (especially strong ball strikers). Better advice would be "get fitted for lie angles, length, and don't over look the type of shaft." DG might not fit you, but it may fit thehillgolfer perfectly.

I agree they are pretty nice shafts... but they are also the stock option most commonly used by manufacturers because True Temper is one of the only companies in existance that can meet productions requirements.... I would say its one of the most used shafts because so many people do not pay attention to their shafts hence why you meet so many people with the s300... True Temper makes some nice shafts, it would be nice to see companies move beyond the DG... BlackGolds, Sensicores... anyways, yeah... I wasn't dissing the DG's to much

In my experience going from a "decent" set if irons (Wilson RM Tour) to a newer model pro line set was a difference between night and day. I think some of it has to do with the age difference since the Wilson's were 10 yrs old and my Nikes are brand new but I was amazed at the difference.

Take the plunge, you'll be happy you did.

DGs are used in pretty good sets, and it's rather silly to dismiss something because a lot of people use it. I

chose to use DG S300 in several of my previous sets of irons because it's a good shaft that fits my swing characteristics. Not many $599 sets of irons have DGs in them. It's mostly the $799 and up ones, I believe.

thanks for all the advice you guys...

so i was talking to this other guy that works up at the golf course and said that our superintendent/pro/manager (he does everything) gets really good deals from titliest and that he could get some for more me, and i think he can fit me too. so i think i'm going to do that, eventually. now i just gotta figure out which titliest irons to get. My one problem with them is the names. its just a bunch of numbers which is really hard to remember, at least for me.

In My Bag:
9.5 degree Mizuno MX-500
15 degree Titliest 904F
Mizuno MP-32 3-PW
Cleveland CG10 Black Pearl 52 degree
Vokey Spin-Milled 56.14
Ping i5 Anser

so i went to the titleist website and i think i got the number/letter thing done. I would perfer the 695MB's, since i like the look of the blade, thin topline and thin sole. But since i think my handicap is prob more liek an 8 or a 9 i dont want to get them and not be able to hit them well. (since the website says 0-5 handicappers)

and DDBowdoin, can you tell me where the 735CM goes from cavity backed to muscle, like which iron?

In My Bag:
9.5 degree Mizuno MX-500
15 degree Titliest 904F
Mizuno MP-32 3-PW

thehillgolfer,

The 735 is a muscle back in the PW-8, 1/2 cavity 7-6, and larger cavity 5-3. Cavity sets are nice ideas in theory; however, execution is very difficult. Players commonly discover they need forgiveness even in the short irons, and the transitions visually don't "flow" quite as well as some people would like. If I was in your shoes, I'd wait a month and a half for the release of the Titleist 755's. Forged stainless player's cavity back clubs replacing the 704's. Should be a big hit.

it all comes down to personal preference... if you are considering the 735cm and they are in your range of play then the forged 8-pw are really nice clubs... personally, I love their feel... they have a classic look to them, and they avoid a color scheme (something that isnt that important but something that fits my eye)

the 755's should be a pretty solid club, I just like the transition set... but wait, get fitted, demo the irons... compare compare compare

well i talk to my club pro/superentindent dude today and he could get me anything titliest for the manufacturing price plus 10%...which he said was like $400-$450 for the $800-900 clubs. which is awesome!! i think i might get some vokey wedges to go along with them as well. but he told i should go somewhere like dicks to get fitted and then bring the specifications to him and he'd get them for me. now i just gotta go somewhere that has all these titleist irons (and lefthanded) and i'll be set.

In My Bag:
9.5 degree Mizuno MX-500
15 degree Titliest 904F
Mizuno MP-32 3-PW
Cleveland CG10 Black Pearl 52 degree

Ping i5 Anser

yeah.... don't go to dicks... if you're going to go to a golf box store go somewhere where they only sell golf clubs, hence a golf store

golfers warehouse, edwin watts, golfsmith... something like that

how bout my local driving range? cuz we dont have any golf stores anywhere close...the one we had just went out of business.

    • Good advice.  When you see a golfer taking short steps, looking down at the ground, it's probably checking for temporary water.  There are plenty of cases were just hitting it from the bad lie is better than where you would drop it. Like hitting of a cart path.
    • Yea I find it ridiculous people having an issue that he could drop in the fairway. Every relief situation is its own instance. You re-assess after a drop. Sometimes the drop is in your favor or not.  Too many scramble only golfers commenting on golf rulings. Usually scrambles you need to maintain the same lie if you hit with in a club length of the ball. 😉
    • MSN J. J. Spaun relief from sprinkler head under fire for not being in the spirit of the game. While I understand the advantage he gains by dropping a ball that ended up in rough in the fairway doesn't seem to kosher in lot of people's eyes, but I suspect this happens more often than lot of people realize and players take the entitled relief every time when the opportunity present itself. Not fair to call him out as a person of 'no integrity' IMO.  A lot of people do not know that both fairway and rough are part of the same general area and ROG does not distinguish them as far as relief is concerned.
    • Jack played in 7 tournaments in 1986. He was on his way out. He was not training or trying to be the best in the world. Honestly, he just caught some good golf at the right time.  Who says Jack wasn't battling injuries at that time either? A lot of stuff wasn't reported on until post 2000 in terms of covering athletes.  At what capacity? He can play, but he can't compete at any sort of level for the PGA or Senior Tour.  Yes, most of them walk away.
