I couldn't be happier with my long game right now. Driver's consistently hitting about 260 - 270 down the fairway, irons are solid, but 50 yards in it's a different story.

My approaches aren't too bad, i'm a pretty good pinseeker from around 80 -100 in but around the green i would really like to make it so much more solid. That's where the scoring really happens. I'm starting to get a better feel on my wedges around the green, but my putting gross. especially my lag putts from about 15ft out. i always go past it on the wrong side. 5 feet in i almost always make it though, i keep my hands ahead a little, square up, and keep a short backstroke for minimal movement in the clubhead, that's my strategy that helps me the most for 5 feet in, sometimes up to 10 feet if its straight.

But distance putts, i'm terrible! If i could lag it right next to the hole it'd be a sign of the end of the world cause i just can't. always ends up 5 feet or more away.

Help?

sounds like you need to work on distance control i think the best drill is close your eyes hit and hit the put to 15 foot keep doing it till you get a feel for the distance.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

I don't know too many great players inside of 100 yards who don't practice that part of their game a lot...or have over the years.

I spend about an hour each day chipping/putting on the practice green. I hit about 50-75 shots of 8 iron-W each day. That is how you get good inside of 100 yards, and score well. My long game actually wasn't that good today, but my short game was incredible. I had one really bad hole where I four putted, and 1 hole where I three putted, but I didn't strike the ball as well as I can, and still shot a great score for myself of 79. It's because I got up and down from almost everywhere, and that's just from all the practice and stuff.

Technique does help too. I'd suggest picking up a DVD like Phil Mickelson's Short Game Secrets. I've heard that helps A LOT of people...would strongly suggest that.

Once you know the technique, it's all about practice.

To sum it up, here is how I truly feel about the short game in Golf:
Practice creats good feel. Feel creates confidence. And confidence creates results.

I can't tell you how much that slapped me in the face, haha. Time to put in that practice, thanks.

keep the short backswing, because that helps you control your speed. Also, get the
line-m-up deal from walmart if you dont already have it, and draw the line on your ball, that way you can line your putts up better. Another tip is get two clubs and line them up at the cup, so that way your ball will always go in. The sound of the ball hitting the bottom of the cup will give you confidence.

make your short game the strongest part of your game with a little practice and the proper technique you will achieve a dynamic short game.

short game begins from the hole backwards, in other words:

putting
short
long or lag putting
chipping around the green
pitch shots of 20-100 yards

putting
short putts is all about hitting the ball on line and straight consistently
lag putting is learning distance control

chipping and pitching is having the right technique so that one you hit the ball solid and know how far you take the club back to achieve a certain distance.

when you practice your pitch shots you also improve your overall ball striking because the pitch shot is a mini golf swing.

keep track of your putts per hole and round and your up and down percentage from around the green.

Unfortunately I can't really add much to this thread but I'm in a similar position as you so hopefully I can learn something here. To follow up on what someone said about buying one of those things so you can draw a line on your ball, skip it, and instead, use the orange ring from a Gatorade bottle as it fits perfectly around a golf ball.
