So went to the local golf joint to get fit for a new set of ping irons. I'm having trouble deciding which to buy.

I'm about an 18 handicap, sort of a repectable beginner looking to improve a great deal in the next few years.

I'm left handed so they only had a 7 iron of each club for me to hit into a net. I hit the G10 pure everytime, the i10 i could feel a little mishit now and then, but knew for sure when i hit one on the screws.

im playing the largest clubs known to man, the big bertha 05' irons, so even the g10 is smaller than im used to.

bottom line is i want one of these sets BAD now...they both felt great to hit.

The club fitter guy said the g10 for sure. just easier to hit and no real down side when compared to i10.

my thoughts:

G10 - for sure would enjoy them right away, but wouldn't force me improve my ball striking over time. might outgrow them in a few years.

i10 - more mishits, may struggle to adjust at the beginning, but would assist me to become a better golfer over time. would not out grow them for a number of years. could learn to work the ball both ways without fighting a huge offset (can draw big berthas very easy, difficult to hit a cut).

i'm 50/50 at this point. any thoughts? it wouldn't be the end of the world to buy g10s and sell them in a couple/three years and move to more of a player iron at that time.

The G10's would still force you to improve your ball striking to lower your scores. If you are an 18 handicap, your ball striking with your irons can not be at a level than can't be improved, so you would certainly improve with the G10's.

I say go with the G10's. You probably won't outgrow them for a while, and you'll enjoy them for the present.

I know many single digit handicaps who still play G.I. irons like the G10's...so you should be fine with them for years to come.

Agreed. The G10s don't hit themselves like some of the "super G.I." irons do. You'll still get feedback on mishits without being completely punished by dead shot, and pure shots feel great. I'd go with the G10s if for no other reason than the long irons will be a bit easier to hit.

I would say... get the G10 3, 4, 5, 6 and the i10 for the rest. I find it fairly difficult to hit the 3 and 4 iron especially in my set of i10s, and the g10s are nice to hit so there's no damage in giving yourself a bit of help with the longer irons.
Though i am fine hitting my 5/6 to wedge, if i could change it, i would have the G10s up to my 7 iron then have my i10s 8-wedge as i think the iron is just too chunky looking from 8 upward.

I would go with the G10s...I know a scratch golfer that never "outgrew" his G2s and wishes he had them back after he sold them.

Dude, get the G10s.....not that I'm biased!

Seriously, it will make you a better golfer, and even if you "outgrow" them in, more than likely a few years....like 3-5, you can resell them....and upgrade then.

Pings hold their value pretty well, I think.

P.S. I love my G10s.

This depends on your iron-related goals. You really aren't going to go wrong on either of them. I'm a big fan of people who want to improve getting players' irons (i10 in this case) as soon as they are able to hit them, as I believe it improves their ball-striking ability in the long run.

However, there are plenty of people who we would consider good golfers - including something like 80% of the LPGA Tour - who play game improvement irons. A few of the men on the PGA Tour even carry an occasional GI/SGI iron. I believe Cabrera's longest iron in the bag was a G10 this year when he won the Masters, although I think the majority of his irons were i10.

So, long story short: what's your goal with the irons?

thanks for the feedback..the more a investigate the more the i10s seem to be smaller looking club with a little less offset for guys who like that kind of "look".

like the guy at the proshop said, not enough benefit for being more difficult to hit.

g10's it is.

I recomend the G10's or better yet same a few hundred and order the G5's. They are very simular and you can get the same shafts if you request.

I played in a tourney our club hosted earlier this year. One of our foursome was the senior club champ. He consistenly struck the ball pure....he was like a machine. He busted 250 yard drives to the desired angle each time and hit the most precise iron / wedges that I've personally seen another player hit (except for the pros).

His irons and wedges were PING G5's.

I think they'll offer you plenty of room to grow.

Oh yeah....senior pro was able to work the ball nicely, too. I've found it possible with these sticks as well.

My father took my recomendation and he bought the G10's. He's loving them. He actually is dropping his beloved 7wood and playing long irons again. 61 years old and flushing 4 irons off the deck.........my hero!!!!!!!!!

Players cb's and blades wont make you a better ball striker. The only thing that will make you better is practice practice practice.

I'm about an 18 handicap, sort of a repectable beginner looking to improve a great deal in the next few years.

First off, you don't pure a shot every time. No one does. To determine how much forgiveness you "need", think about how much you miss the sweet spot by. I play the i10s and hit the sweet spot more often than not. An average 18, though, doesn't. My dad plays G2s and they are much, much more forgiving than my clubs. I can misshit every shot badly and still get good results. With i10s, not so much.

I really don't think that less forgiving clubs will make anyone better. You need to practice. I bought my i10s when I was a 15. I also hit the ball much better than my handicap indicated (still do). Back then, I'd 3-putt 5 times per round and never had a 1-putt. So, for my game, i10s made sense since I hit the ball well. How well do you hit the ball (be honest)? How fast do you plan on improving? How often do you play/practice?
I would say... get the G10 3, 4, 5, 6 and the i10 for the rest. I find it fairly difficult to hit the 3 and 4 iron especially in my set of i10s, and the g10s are nice to hit so there's no damage in giving yourself a bit of help with the longer irons.

I think once you improve, you'll want the 3-6 in the i10s as well.

My advice: in the short term (next 1-3 years) G10s. In the long term (3-6+ years) i10s. It really depends on how much you plan on improving because I have never met an 18 who can hit player's CBs consistently enough to play them.

Deja vu, LF !

Back in 2009, I was switching from stiff to R-flex shafts irons and woods. I did tech research on the popular irons, and i10 was the front-runner on opening day.

I tried the G10s and the Bbs, but had trouble on both with the high-launch shafts causing the short irons to balloon.

The i10s had better flight, but I didn't like the feel and couldn't seem to get comfortable with them.

I ended up going with Callaway Xx20s, an SGI model with a mid-launch shaft. A couple of seasons later I switched to X20 Tours for smaller heads and better feel. (Despite my 25 HDCP I actually hit them pretty well, I just have terrible hook problems with FWs and hybrids).

i10 was a watershed iron for Ping. More forgiving than the S series, but a little rough for some to hit. But, those who could hit the i10s loved them.

I would suggest you really focus on the best shaft for you in your iron selection. If you need a little extra lift on your shots, go with the high-launch shaft G10. If not, G10 might be a pain on windy days. (Note: not all SGI irons have high-launch shafts)

If you get i10s you would really have to work on your game to get them grooved to your swing. ... Any chance there's a set of i15s around the shop where you're testing?

Focus, connect and follow through!
