Golfsmith and my Golf teacher disagree on my Length and lie

I know I'm not an expert player, but I would tend to trust the golf pro for two reasons:

1) He's not biased and trying to sell you something. For all you know, you could have been "fitted" at +1/2 inch because they had one set left they were trying to sell.

2) A golf swing seems to be individualized to each person, even if they do try to copy a certain tour pro. It's possible that the +1/2 inch would work for every other 6 foot 3 person, but something about you is different.

Both of these two people want to sell you something. One a set of clubs that doesn't care how you swing or play. The other is selling his reputation for teaching you, and cares about your swing and how you play. Which one should you trust?

I am going to say this as nicely as I can. The guy at golfsmith does not know your swing like your teacher does. If your teacher says one thing and the guy that was trained for a few hours on club fitting says another, I would go with your teacher.

Went back, used a different fitter. He thought i was more like +1 inch but he did think +1.5 and 2up would work too. Kinda reluctantly agreed with my golf teacher.
He did take the time to look at my grip, im glad he did since he told me i need oversize grips as well.
Cost comes out to $170 to add 1 inch of length, change all the irons to 2 up, and then regrip and weight them...for that price i think im going to just have a custom set ordered from their site. I see you can build some great sets to custom. any of you ever use that on their site? the builder said if i used the site and added length the weight on some of the clubs would not be correct. is that true? Wow, this is complex!!!

Any of you ever hit or like the Callaway Big Bertha 08? Im leaning to those vs the sumos.

Adding length to an existing shaft is going to change the swingweight. You have to find out how many points, though.

From personal experience, go to a personal fitter. Have them measure you and examine your swing. Hit clubs that have different weights and find what feels comfortable. Then have your set built based upon that, wedges included.

You can have a custom built, high end set of irons built to spec for roughly $80 a club. If you'd like, send me a PM. I can send you a list of really good personal fitters that will build you an amazing set of irons.

What is probably happening is you are hunching over to compensate for your height and thus hitting the ball correctly. The Golfsmith employee was more than likely just looking at the impact tape and or lie board if you were using it, and not trying to analyze your swing. Your instructor who is trying to fix/adjust your swing recognizes that you are compensating and is correct in his assumption. But like others have said, nothing beats getting out and hitting your clubs to determine what is right for you. Everytime I hit a new driver in the store I crush it straight down the middle.....

I went with the +1.5 and 2 up...hit a few balls with a club like this at the store..no more hunched back...but need to wrok on my swing even more now...atleast i feel more comfortable.. i ordered callaway big bertha 2008 irons in my specs...added the oversized grips too! cant wait to try em

u hav to understand that club fitting benefits any player! Is ur pro a professional club fitter too? if not are the golfsmith workshop ppl professional fitters? the reason they ask u to swing with impact tape is to see how the sole of ur club makes contact with the ground... But rmbr it is better to hav a perfect swing then use the club to compensate rather than compensate the club with a bad swing... my advice... bring ur pro along with u to golfsmith and get things sorted

I would follow the recommendations of the instructor and the pro, their ideas make sense; I am 6'3" and my specs are +1" and 2-up from Titleist's standard as determined by a session at Titleist FittingWorks. Had my irons adjusted to that and wow, what a difference!

    • Is the guy a PGA professional or a USGTF professional, or just a guy that tinkers in a shop and has a pretty good golf game? Not knocking you in any way, just curios. Did he take a look at your clubs and take any measurements to see if your clubs length/ lie were OK for you? If you are hitting on a full size range then the launch monitor isn't 100% necessary, ball flight will tell you a lot along with some foot powder on the club face. If all he has is a net then yes a launch monitor is needed.  50 bucks an hour seems like a good deal. I pay 50 for a 1/2 hour. 30 mins is about all my mind will absorb and I leave with one solid thing to practice and a few drills to last to next time. Keep us posted on your journey.
    • I had a issue with the watch picking up the sensors on a consistent basis. I did what the instructions said, but since I have a GPS watch and an H4 I sent it back rather than to try to work out the issue.
    • The Golfing Machine calls a shorter full swing motion “pitching” IIRC but I don’t think that’s what was going on here. Did you get video or anything? Launch monitor data?
    • ^ right here. A short game pitching motion is not the same as a full swing in feel nor intent. It’s just not a mini-swing at all. Now if the instructor said to make slow full swings with a 6i and try to hit them only 100 yards, that would be more in line with what I view full swing instruction to be.
    • How does he fit for clubs with that setup?  I get this to an extent, but plenty of players have slightly different patterns with different clubs throughout their bag, but using that logic why not start with 3 foot putts or 5yd chip shots? I have quite different feels for a 20-40yd pitch shot than I do for a 140yd shot. Loft presentation at setup and impact, ground contact, weight transfer (or lackthereof), etc are all different on a 20-40yd shot vs a full iron shot.  If you enjoyed the lesson and found value in it that's great, personally I'd be a bit annoyed if I went in and wanted to work on full swing stuff and this guy has me doing 20-40yd pitch shots for an hour with my lob wedge.
