Why would a 21* fairway wood be called that and not a designated wood number?

I believe that is a 7 wood but it may be because different manufacturers have different lofts for a given club and by declaring the loft right up front, there won't be any confusion.

+1

You will find that lofts will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

It's not a stupid question, but anyway, lofts vary from manufacturer to manufacturer so it easier to signify a club for it's loft. For instance I think the g10 3 wood is 16 degrees while most are 15 or 15.5, so to clear up confusion it may just be easier to ask for the degree.

Fairway Woods don't really go the way of loft inflation, so it's a bit confusing at first. However, there used to be a stigma to having any wood other than a driver and 3-Wood in your bag, especially for men. A number of players chuckled at Ray Floyd when he put a 5-Wood in his bag for the 1976 Masters, and he went on to play the par-5s in 14 under, which I believe is still the Masters record.

So, why the loft listed instead of a number? Before hybrids - and, to some extent, even now - the 7-Wood (which is what I believe I would call a 21 degree fairway wood) is a fantastic replacement for a 3-iron for many players. However, when there is a stigma to it, some people would rather call it by its loft, perhaps so they can tell their friends it's "really" something else.

Its probably a 7 wood. My 3 wood is 14 deg, a 5 wood would be about 17 or so and 21 would be a 7 wood, thats about the same loft as my 3 hybrid.
