Hi. i just started out playing golf. These are videos from my range session yesterday. I wasn't playing too well. When i went out today, i focused on having my weight centered at address and shifting my weight from the back foot during the backswing to the big toe on my front foot towards impact. I had a very good session today, and actually made solid contact with the ball that sent the ball flying straight and far.

do you not see that in these videos? what tips can you give me?

thanks guys

You have a nice golf swing for just starting out, good rotation.

I would recommend to turn the club face when you are hip high so that the face of the club is facing the same direction you are facing and have the toe of the club pointing up in the air.

When you finish your swing the club should point in the opposite direction or the face should be pointing behind you and the toe pointing up.

Try only hitting pitch shots taking the club back hip high until you make solid contact.

focus on the impact and your take away, make sure that when you take the club back that you do not sway and only go back naturally with the length of the arms.

i'll try that tip of taking the club to hip height. Should it be a full follow through?

i play tennis, and i took the concept of keeping the headstill from it. However, when i should look up? after contact?

also, how is my stance and how far my are apart?

Very solid for a beginner. The snap back at the finish indicates that you are slightly over swinging. This is probably not the best place to have your swing analized but I'd suggest a little less force (arms) and let the club swing free. Then hold your pose with belly pointed at the target. Other than that you are golden kid.

Don't stand over the ball for so long. It disrupts any tempo or rhythm you may be able to develop after a good shot. Also, it looks like your thinking too much when your just standing over the ball for 15-20 seconds.

Try to develop some tempo as you go along, get into a good timed rhythm for your golf swing - you should see instant results.

I do feel like I'm gripping the club really tightly and using a lot of force. Il try to loosen up tommorrow.

you mean hit one after another? I do think a lot when I swing. Usually, there's one or two aspects of my stroke that I focus on. Sometimes it's not swaying and sometimes it's weight transfer. Should I hit with a clear mind?

You mean pointing down right? Just making sure.

your arms and wrists are too stiff. Dont be afraid to bend your arms a bit at the top of the swing and let your wrists hinge properly. Take a look at tiger woods at the top, and try to replicate that image through a mirror. Good luck!

Well, at the range - no, you should be thinking over the ball and trying to get rid of swing flaws, however once the ball is down in front of you, you don't want to stand over it for 20 seconds. That's not doing you any good. You want to be able to free-flowingly produce your golf swing.

UPDATE

This session today was much better. i tried to be more relaxed, and tried to get a rhythm going. what else can i improve?

On your video (especially the second one with the driver), I see your spine angle changing throughout the swing. Try to keep the spine angle constant all the way through the swing, that will improve your ball striking. Good luck!

I tend to stay away from the swing critiques. I leave it for the guys like TMO, because I don't know anymore than anyone else, but here goes.

Use your legs more. You are just rotating your shoulders which is making the club swing. Your legs hardly bend or shift at all. Great out of a fairway bunker, not so good when you have a forced carry of 200 yards. When you make your backswing, flex your knees more and have your legs turn with your body. That will get your hips turning easier when you bring the club back. You are almost standing straight up when you take the club back. This will give you much more power. You can take the club back with your shoulders all day long, but you will never gain any power unless you can coil your whole body and have your legs helping with the swing.

My other thought is on you grip. It is hard to tell on the video, but it looks like your top hand is a little bit underneath the club. You might want to bring that more to the left and on top of the club.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I'd say you are off to a great start.....congrats are in order.

The only two pointers I'll throw out are:
  1. Don't stand over the ball too long...nothing good comes from it....it's like a long blessing where the food grows cold.
  2. Don't let your right hand dominate your golf swing...try some practice swings with the right hand just being along for the ride.

Good luck with the game. You've got a scenic practice range, indeed.

Wow, nice setup. Especailly for a beginner, you look great at address. Good posture.

You're off to a great start. It's all about the setup and grip... if you mess those up, you don't stand a chance with the rest of your swing!
