A lot of good thoughts have been uttered by the PGA tour and players, such as smaller, firmer greens, tighter fairways, longer courses.... etc. etc.

I'm sure you've heard of it all, and a lot of them are a good idea. But I think I've come up with something better.

How about we limit the amount of clubs they can carry to let's say, 10? They'll have to put more thought into what goes into the bag, and won't have the luxury of having nearly perfect yardages.

Discuss.

The problem with that is there are a number of these guys who can shoot much like what they already shoot with only one or two clubs. Bubba Watson shot in the mid-70s recently with only a 4-wood... and he's never won a professional tournament. So I don't think scores would change that much.

That having been said, I think it would be an interesting post-season event, though: doing a 5- or 10-club challenge. In general, though, I also don't like the idea of the professionals having different rules than we do for their game. It's one of the things that makes golf special: Tiger Woods and I play by the same set of rules.

Yeah, I don't think it'll make that much of a difference.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

Johnny Miller said this about 2 or 3 years ago. If you slowed these greens down more these guys wouldn't make these 6-10 footers like tap ins. Makes a lot of sense to me. I hate slow greens. The further I take the putter back the more I push or pull the putt.

I think you'd have to take the max number down to 4 or 5 to see a noticeable difference. These guys practice the same yardage with as many clubs in their bag as they can.

I'm with ezmoney. I'll take a fast green anyday over slow. I play much better on faster greens. Particularly 5 foot in. All in all I like things the way they are though. It adds excitement. Majors that are overly hard are boring to watch.

"Pros", sorry-couldn't take it anymore.

The apostrophe is correct because "pro's" is an abbreviation of "professionals".

And.....it's "any more" not "anymore".

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Really? That's crazy. Yeah, I don't know how much it would change. No one really likes slow greens. Making the greens slow would be stupid. I see nothing wrong with the way golf is played on the PGA Tour to this day. I don't know why everything has to be "so hard" and why we have to keep adding length, and this and that. What's wrong with going low? ;)

You are wrong on both accounts.

Thanks for the support-it's definitely "anymore", and since "pro" is short for "professional" the plural would be "pros". "Pro's" indicates possession.

But then again...who cares?!

But then again...who cares?!

Folks routinely misuse punctuation marks and spell words incorrectly. It's a message board; it happens. But correctness became an issue in this particular thread.

I think it's cleared up, however.

But then again...who cares?!

It's a pet peeve for some people, to the point of being distracting. Same thing with your/you're, their/there/they're, etc.

Here's an idea: after each hole, the pro has to take one shot of something hard for each stroke under par for that hole. Should work as an equalizer. Also provides a marketing opportunity for whoever wants to provide the liquor.

By the way, a similar strategy can help those of us who get upset over punctuation on message boards relax a little bit.

I visit this site to share information and read about the great game of golf, not get a grammar lesson. If you can understand what someone's saying then there's no need to correct them.

I agree with the idea of slowing down the greens. They're no fun.

The big problem with slow greens is that when you make a green slower, you will also make them softer. With softer greens these guys could hit to an exact yardage and know the ball won't go anywhere. How many times have you seen players hit an approach shot that lands +/- 2 yards from the hole? It would be even more if they knew there was no danger about the ball rolling out and getting into trouble.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

But then again...who cares?!

Well if your going to correct someone then you shouldn't be mistaken. After all the grammar Nazis should be good at grammar.

By the way, since when does an apostrophe mark an abbreviation? Were not saying y'all here, it's a real abbreviation, not slang.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
