In light of his recent performance at the Open I'm starting to wonder when this guy will win a major. He seems to have the talent but when will the mind come?

Binh.

Please remember this question being asked about Phil not long ago. El Nino still has possibly the most productive years of golf coming in front of him now. There is no way someone of his talent does not win a major. Of course, Colin Montgomery probably disagrees......

It's going to come down to putting for Sergio, every other aspect of his game is solid enough for him to win a major. Putting can be very streaky, I just don't think he's pulled it all together on the greens at a major. He will though, he is very young and has plenty of time yet.

I think he putts fine... except when his head gets in the way. And that's where his mental game shows up.

He almost always seems to hit the ball pretty well, but every time he gets near the lead his putter gets balky. That's more a mental thing than a putter thing. You don't shoot a front-nine 29 in a major with a bad putting stroke (granted, the eagle helped!).

But as soon as he got near the lead, his mind got in the way of his putting stroke.

I voted "never." I still do think he'll win one, but since he's 26 and the poll only went to the age of 36... He's played 33 majors. Phil was only 0-for-39 and Phil's problem was never mental, it was just his approach to the game (conservative vs. aggressive).

Sergio is clearly the best player never to have won a major... of those who still have a chance to do it.

Next year. Simple as that.

You can sticky this topic or do whatever you want, but remember you heard it here first. Sergio will silence the demons and win a major next season. He has the tools to win any of the four.

If he would have been grouped with anyone but Tiger this past Sunday, he may have won the Claret Jug. Other than his Tiger-phobia, I believe Sergio will be ok in future majors.

Next year. Simple as that.

Reminds me of something else I read recently...

Stuart Appleby has finished runner-up in a British Open before (2002 to Ernie Els), and he is long overdue to win a major championship. Appleby will continue the Aussie success on the PGA Tour in 2006 by picking up his first-career major championship. The winning score will be 282 (-6).

Both missed the cut. Poulter at +7 and Appleby at only +2 (unlikely he'd have shot a pair of 62s on the weekends to tie Tiger).

I'm just raggin' on ya man. We're all pretty bad at predicting things, but then again, we're not all so bold about it. $500 Sergio doesn't win a major by the end of 2007?

Ian Puolter is a good player, but it seems to me that in the majors when he breaks out the flashy threads he seems to lose focus on the game at hand.

Like his T12 at the U.S. Open this year?

Poulter does pretty well in the big events... and is pretty tough in the Ryder Cup, too.

I voted Never. Until he gets that thing between his ears straightened out its not going to happen (unless Tiger retires in the next ten years ).

I think he is trying to make himself into a Jim Furyk style putter when most of what he does is better suited to a style like Jay Haas, Haase? Whoever works with Jay is who he should go see. If you are not using a style that comes naturally or is at least comfortable, maintaining confidence in the crunch is much more difficult I believe.

    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲

    • Why wouldn't it have? It's not like you were playing it as a 145yd par 5 and made a 2 or something.  Or not like it was playing 50yds to a temporary green or something either.
