I have finally got a club to try and fill the gap in my set from the 5 iron to my driver (this is a pretty big gap).

Some background:
I can hit my 5iron tee'd up a consistent 200 yrds and from a decent fairway lie I get about 190 max. My driver is ranging from 250-290 consistently. I play a solid single digit handicap of 8.2 and my last 2 rounds were 73-73 this past sunday and monday (par 72). I play a very easy course measured at 69/113 (schenectady municipal golf course).

I got a 19deg. Nickent 3DX utility 5f/w and I have tried other hybrids and woods 3-7 but nothing seems to be consistent. I just don't know what I'm supposed to do in my swing to get good results. Maybe someone can point me to an article explaining what is supposed to be going on during my swing.

I play with people who are 20+ handicaps and hit their fairway woods/hybrids clean all the time why do I have so much trouble with this?

I just hit my hybrids like they're regular irons, nothing special. Im not a great player but Ive really come to rely on hybrids for long fairway shots and sometimes on long par 3's and short par 4's. I put them pretty far forward in my stance and take a wide stance and usually get good results. Im not a long hitter, a good drive is 225-230 yards for me but I can hit my 3H a little over 200 yards from the turf, 4H just under 200 and my 5H anywhere from 160 to 180 as it gets used a lot on par 3's and can get it to land softly too.

I noticed you are playing MP 57s. Do you take a shallow or deep divot? My guess is for hybrids you might need to widen your stance a bit and move the ball a lttle bit more forward to shallow out your swing a bit, don't overdo it.

my divot is around 3/4 to an inch deep with my irons. I'll try the above suggested. I think I just need more practice.

Why don't you hit a 3 or 4 iron?? If you're hitting your 5 iron 200 plus yards you shouldn't have any issues hitting a 3 or 4 iron.

I use to have trouble getting ball up with my hybrid, until i found out you have to widen your stance a bit, and move the ball up a little bit. overall it feels like an iron with a flatter swing.

    • Day 121: did a bit of mirror work with my driver. Working on shortening the backswing.
    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
