Hi
I would like to know how do I transfer my weight from the top of my backswing to the impact and when do I start to straighten my left knee(I am a right hander) in my downswing.
I read several articles about weight transferring. I found from them that there seemed to be two opposite ways to make it. The one is to do it with upper body, starting turning right shoulder back to where it is at address and making the weight over the right leg. The other one is with lower body, starting turning the hip and straighten left leg press the left feet against the ground independently from the shoulders turning. Therefore, the two ways confused me a lot. Can anyone here let me know which one is better and correct or give your own suggestion for helping me with my backswing.
Thank you

Hi

People talk about shifting to your right foot and then back to your left, which you should, but instead of shifting you should move the weight to your left foot and actually fall away from the ball. This principal is called counterfall and allows your club to swing freely around your body.

() () ''' The () symbols are your feet and the ''' is the direction your weight should go to start the downswing. BTW this is a MAJOR power move, I'm a smaller guy (5'9" 170) and it helps me get my clubhead speed up to about 105-110. Hope that helps.

but I still don't know what you mean by"falling away from the ball" and when I do it. At impact? or at the start of downswing?

thanks Driftlant

It is a little different for everybody, but usually when you start your downswing. Everybody that plays golf does just not enough.

Ever swung a kid around in the yard, going in circles as they fly thru the air? It is the same principle. If somebodys swing speed is 100 your hands are moving around 65 mph, that is alot of weight you need to counteract, if you can counteract it you will be more balanced, more accurate and have a better natural tempo. Creating straight, long shots.

Exactly where should the weight fall on the left foot? I'm falling over a lot, sometimes towards the target after a shot. Sometimes to the right, against where the ball was. I think my weight is at all the wrong places sometimes, very much at the balls of my feet toward the toes. Many good players lift the left foot and plant it before the downswing, will the weight be on the left heel?

Your weight should go away from the ball, so your weight should be mostly on your left heel. You can even set up on your heels kind of keeping your toes up to feel the weight on your heels.

On the backswing put the weight on the inside of your right foot, and then when gravity starts your downswing you should already be moving your left hip a little away from the ball. At impact you should be fully on your left hell and staying there untill you have completed your finish.

I saw Paddy doing a drill where as he finishes his backswing..he lifts his left foot up and is completely balanced on his right leg....then he stars his downswing by stepping down with theleft foot and digs it in....
I start my weight transfer as my hands start to bring the club down..a lot of people say I start to shift my weight too early and I lose power....
I just don't have confidence to shift and uncock right before impact b/c my timing sucks when I try to do it.

Agree with what others have said, left heel on the downswing.

Maybe you're having more trouble than you should because you're not properly pivoting and transferring your weight in your backswing? If you're sliding in the backswing instead of turning, it will be difficult to make the move back to the left heel in the downswing. For me, once I get into the correct backswing positions, the transfer back down just happens without even thinking about it.

Every action in golf should get an equal or opposite reaction. So, in the backswing, you should feel your weight in your right heel as your turn and pivot around your right leg. On the way down, you should feel your weight transferring to your left heel.

I've read before that you should feel like you've got a sponge full of water under your left foot and at the top of your downswing, the first move down should be to feel like you want to squeeze all of that water out of the sponge with your left foot. That may give you the feeling you're after?
