Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I don't workout for golf in particular. However, since your core muscles and legs are used as the main force in a golf swing, I'd like to suggest a few weight training exercises

Barbell squats, Deadlifts, Bent over barbell (or dumbell) rows, incline bench press and pull ups. Those will get you stronger all over than pretty much any other exercises, period. Avoid machines for the most part as they don't compare to free weights in terms of recruiting muscle fibers. If you do try these exercises, take my advice and start light.

**Edit *******

Don't, for one second, think you are going to "get bulky" and not be able to swing a club doing the exercises I mentioned. The only way to pack on muscle is to eat a surplus of calories and try hard to gain muscle. Believe me, it's not easy to "bulk up" and takes serious effort. You're not going to start lifting weights and start tearing through shirts in a week. Plus, look at Tiger. He's got guns and it doesn't seem to get in the way. You will get much stronger though.

I've been reading Get YOurself in Golf Shape: Year-Round Drills to Build a Strong Flexible Swing . I've skimmed through the book and have just started reading it in full, but it seems to make a lot of sense, and I like how the author explains the physiology of the golf swing. There are some wieght training excercises, but also a lot of stretching to improve flexibility.

There's a lot of information on general exercise plans, but this is one of the few resources I've found that concentrates on conditioning specific to playing golf.

Here's my routine:

Mon= Chest and Arms, 20 minutes of cadio
Tues= Play 18
Wednesday= Rest
Thursday= Legs, 20 minutes of cardio
Friday= Rest
Saturday= Yoga, Shoulders and Back
Sunday= Play 18

Before and after I do any exercise, I stretch out the entire body, holding each movement for 20 seconds. The weight lifting routine is fairly heavy (8-15 reps) and targeted at overall strength and muscular endurance. My workouts usually last 75 minutes, including the cadio work. Very similar to Camillo's routine.

for sure the best workout is streching. Your arm muscles should not be that big otherwise they get in the way. Just stay healthy, you dont see the pros looking beefy

Squats, curls, sit ups, push ups, dips, and shoulder press. Is that sufficient for golf?

I'd say that would be sufficient for a general work out. Like an overall keep your body in shape type. If you have access to a yoga ball, medicine ball, and cable pulleys, you can do some amazing golf specific workouts. Yoga ball mainly for core workouts where you can do push ups, sit ups, curls, and shoulder presses so you can simultaneously work out the stabilizing muscles in the core. Medicine ball is great to do some tossing motion from the top. Pulleys can be used in many different positions and can be used to mimic the swing as well.

I workout but not for golf specific.  I do classic workout stuff.  I lift with almost no cardio.  The reason I'm posting is I've seen such gains in golf.  I can hit the ball farther than ever with less effort.  Peope say don't build your arms.  The bi-product of building your arms is having really strong forearms.  Mine are much different and I thing this and my added legs strength has really helped me swing the club better.  I don't buy into don't build muscle if you want to be better at golf.  I think that is a bunch of garbage.

I can't agree more. I think building your arms is fine. Look at some of the younger uprising guys on tour. Like the Rickie Fowlers, Camillo Villegas, and even Tiger Woods. They are all pretty well built. I do think you can get too "big", but c'mon unless you lift like an NFL, NBA, or MLB player I think you'll be fine.
