I just bought a dozen Pro V1 practice balls for 30 bucks... They are new balls, I plan on gaming them, just wondering what your thoughts are on these...

They pretty much seem flawless except for the big PRACTICE written on the ball.

They are good balls that some of the higher end ranges will have available. Usually the practice balls you find in sport stores are the old version of what is current. They are legal to game with but your playing partners might laugh at you. Other than that just your normal golf ball.

They are basically the same thing with minor imperfection. My Uncle buys them all the time, then he sharpies the practice logo off, as if hes lining it up. Its a good buy to me.

They are awesome balls. I don't worry about the cosmetic blems....and none of the guys I play with do either.

You are essentially getting a ProV1 at a $10-12 doz discount.

I have a dozen or so in my bag now....with an ebay purchase of 3 dz 2009 version being shipped soon.

I think they are regular Pro V1 and Pro V1x balls that got stamped "PRACTICE" - nothing more, nothing less. I don't believe the 'minor blemish' story as I have never ever been able to see one. They serve a particular market. I am sure they could sell the regular Pro V1 for $30/doz and still make a profit.

I bought five dozen "Practice" TP Blacks for $104.00 shipped to my house. I used a black marker through the "Practice" for my putting line. I might order five more dozen next week. That many should last for a while.

I have bought a couple dozen of these. I also was never able to see anything wrong with them, only difference I could tell was the word PRACTICE on the side. They perform just as well.

It's what the pros use on their practice tees I believe. There shouldn't be anything wrong with these balls. If there was, the pros wouldn't use them to practice with.

Well if Golfsmith says they're legal then I guess they are. I'll have to pick up a case of these.

Pro V1 Practice golf balls are conforming products that differ only due to a cosmetic blemish such as paint, ink or registration of stamping. Pro V1 Practice golf balls do not have any construction or performance deficiencies.

I would treat them with caution in competitions. How do you

know they are USGA/R&A; conforming?

Hmm. Golfsmith

would say that wouldn't they? They're selling them!

The balls in the pic are current balls I'm gaming. Bought those from a display at the counter of my pro shop...he's got them priced at 6 balls for $15 or $3 each.

The 3 dozen I'm expecting in the mail were bought on an ebay auction....3 doz new Prov1 practic balls for $72. If for no other reason, the ProV1 is an awesome ball around the greens....best short game ball I've ever used. I've got no complaints off the tee either. It is fun spinning them back occasionally on full shots.

Well it'd be illegal for them to advertise illegal balls as legal, now wouldn't it?

Thanks for the link. Good to know.

You might think so but then no-one ever breaks the law now do they?

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
