Clearly you have never worked in retail because everything you buy is marked up just most things you aren't paying 500 dollars. Example if you bought a soda today for 1.50 I'm betting that retailer just made minimum 90 cents off that bottle. Bottled water and retail clothing are the two worst things for mark ups. A t-shirt that costs 25 that retailer just made 20-22 dollars. Everything is the same it just cost less.

This is the first complaint on club pricing I've heard in a year.

There are bargains to be found everywhere right now if you'll just do a small amount of homework.

Perhaps you should really scale back your desires on balls. I can assure you that will loose a great deal of balls....you'll blow through a dozen in the course of some rounds.....I'm serious, it happens.

There are a lot of high quality balls out there that are priced in a nice budget range. Take a look at the Precept Laddie ball....you can often find them for $20 for 24 balls. They are great balls.

The Top Flight D2 series are great, too.

I'm sure Titleist would love your business but really at this point you would be much better served with one of the above selections.

Remember...initially it is the "archer" not the "arrow" that needs the focus. You can't buy a game. Start out with a decent set of cavity backed irons/wedges that fit you and a decent 3 wood that also fits and then take it from there. Spend the ProV1 money on a few lessons instead.

I say get the shag bag of recycled balls from Walmart or wherever. You will lose them all. I actually get most of mine at thrift stores, usually pay about $1 a dozen, and not terrible ones either.

Take a look at someplace like rockbottomgolf.com. If you are flexible about the brand (and you should be as a beginner) you can find some good deals there.

Wilson Prostaff driver - $40
Mizunio driver - $72
Adams draw driver - $50

Wilson Prostaff fairway woods - $30
Callaway fairway woods - $70

Nickent iron set -$140
Wilson Staff iron set $249

Nike putter - $40

BTW, if you want my advice as a beginner don't even put the driver or fairway woods in your bag. Concentrate on getting good with your irons and wedges FIRST, then when you have mastered them put your fairway woods in your bag. When you have mastered your fairway woods, only then start using your driver.

IMHO, people screw themselves up by learning to swing with a driver. A driver is a specialty club (just like your putter is.) You shouldn't be learning to swing by swinging a driver.

Great advice guys I appreciate all the input.

I'm not sure why the smarta** comments though. "What a terrible post" and "Obviously you've never worked in retail".

Im new to the game COMPLETELY. Im asking questions. Im not sure how its so terrible. Me never working in retail has nothing to do with wondering why clubs are marked up 250%. I know companies have to make money, but it seems golf equipment is a little rediculous. Anyway, I chose to pick the game up, I chose to buy what I bought. Im not saying this was a mistake. I love the game so far and completely addicted. It only gets better. To all that decided to have something good to say, thanks.

I see your point, It begs the question as to why ANYONE would buy the newest driver, etc. when in just a few months or so it will drop over a hundred dollars.... doesnt make sense to me either, I understand that Its a business just like others, but for example, Polo shirts are $75 and people buy the shit out of them, but thats probably because they arent going to lower their price to $35 in 6 months....

People spend $75 on polo shirts? Apparently I've been doing this all wrong. I buy drivers priced like polo shirts, polo shirts priced like a sleeve of ProV1s, and balls priced like a couple wooden tees.

I went to the local Dick's yesterday for my normal supplies balls, tees and was just looking around and saw the Callaway FT ibrids $1499.99 for the set. Who on this planet can justify paying that much for a set of clubs?

uhm... I buy hi-tech polos for $10-20 that were $50-75 at the begining of summer. Pretty much the same story as clubs... hell, last week I bought three pairs of shorts (2 different places) for $6.99 and $8, normally $25 and $35. I also bought some shirts for $12 that started the season at $59.99.

Yeah... you and I both... apparently some people just don't know how to shop. I also just bought 6 dozen golf balls at $12 a dozen... they are the Maxfli Tour Fires... play pretty close to any other premium ball that would normally cost $40 a dozen.

yes Golf Balls are very over rated. Any kind of normal distance ball would be fine. I have been playing with the wilson prostaff x2 distance and spin. Loved them both. A nice plain style golf ball with good feel and distance. They were 9.99 for 20

I'm not trying to be a smart*** I was just pointing out that golf clubs are no different than anything else in retail. You were specifically pointing out the mark up of golf clubs and I was pointing out that everything is marked way up. It has nothing to do with you being completely new to golf because if you ever bought anything else expensive I'm sure there was a big mark up.

Driver: i15, 3 wood: G10, Hybrid: Nickent 4dx, Irons: Ping s57, Wedges: Mizuno MPT 52, 56, 60, Putter: XG #9

It has everything to do with me being completely new. I'm 32 years old. I'm a smart shopper/money saver. Therefore I spend a good bit of time shopping and comparing prices. I'll say this again. A "new technology" FT-i going from $499 down to $299 (I got it for $160 and also found it afterwards for $130) and a set of x18r's from $499 ( I'm assuming they were $499 at release ) to $330 ( I found them for $299 afterwards ) is just crazy to me. You dont see car prices dropping from $30,000 to $12,000 even after 2 years. So when I came into this blind, started shopping, and realized the mark up, it was very shocking. I guess because Im new?

Only reason for this post was to say WOW I realize now what Ive gotten into and wanted some feedback on a ball I should use. Im in for the long haul.

It's a win/win situation for all involved! The OEM's sell their clubs at these ridiculous prices because a lot people MUST HAVE the latest and greatest. Every year, the OEMs new offerings claim they have this new technology that will significantly improve your game. However, when they cut their prices, you can purchase quality equipment/technology at significantly discounted prices. The OEM's profit from the 'impulsive' golfer and the frugal 'realistic' golfer gets good gear at good prices.

You're missing my point... all I'm trying to say is that golf clubs are no different than anything else in retail and the mark up of a golf club is the same percentage as clothing, TV's, cell phones, bottled water, etc. You are looking at it from a dollar perspective and you can't really do that on mark ups.

New subject have you looked into lessons at all they will really help you start on the right track.

Yea I will keep this stuff for a while. I guess I'll be the cheap golfer lol. The way I look at it is this. I read tons of reviews on the FT-i. TONS. Back from 2007 til now. I read 1 bad review. Everyone talked about how awesome their game is now blah blah. So my thoughts are, if it was so good back then, it should be so good now. How much better can these things get? I witnessed myself the difference this driver made. I stood back and wondered how the heck they could make a club that could actually make a difference without much effort. People want to hit the ball straight off the tee, and also have control when they need it. This club hits the ball straight. Thats all I need right now. Well, it helps ME hit it straight. I know they didnt have the new stuff 50 years ago so it does have something to do with the player, but still. My confidence is high with this and Ive only been playing 3 weeks, and Ive only played at the range. No course yet.

Ive played all the top brand balls in Titleist, Bridgestone, Tayloramde, etc. I have a few favorites and one of them is the Titleist HP2 Tour. I bet a lot of people think what the hell kind of ball is that but to be honest its $25 a dozen and I buy them at Big 5 sporting goods. They are soft with a decent amount of spin and still give me a little distance. A ball is really personal prefrence so my honest opinion is go out and buy some cheaper balls and see what you like. If you want to try the high end balls then buy sleves to save yourself the money.

Yea. I went to the range this morning to work on the irons. It didn't go well. I called him and he contacted his friend up at the club. He's going to do a 3 man session for 1 hour, lunch, and then play the course for $125 all together. Beginning of october. I dont know what lessons normally go for. Is this a good deal?

I contacted a couple of local pro shops, one said they would call Titleist on Tuesday (as Monday is a holiday) for me to order a +6 weight, but the one said Titleist wouldn't have it anymore since it's an older model. Anyway, I will probably buy an aftermarket weight from eBay. Any concerns around aftermarket weight on eBay? They are not cheap, like around $15.
