I've been thinking about adding a 3W and a 5W to the set. I hit one of my friend's 3W and 5W and hit them quite well, even though I'm pretty new to the game.

My current make up is in my signature.

I've spent some time hitting quite a few different woods over the last week or so. I'm not wanting to necessarily spend a ton of money. Ideally, I'd be able to keep it around $100-125/club.

I would want to use the 3 wood from the tee and from the ground.

I've noticed the following clubs can be had for under a $100 new in retail stores (possibly even cheaper online):

Nickent 4DX 3W
Wilson Staff Fybrid 3W, 5W (or FY)
MacGregor Mactec

I've also hit (albeit indoors) the PING G10 3W and the '07 Burner ( http://www.golfsmith.com/products/TM...Graphite_Shaft ) and liked both of them. In addition, I've hit the Mizzy MX-700, TM Burner (newer version), Titleist 909F2. The Cobra S9-1 had the best numbers on the launch monitor (for what those are worth, which may be nothing - and that certainly could have been equal parts quality ball striking and dumb luck).

I've heard good things about Sonartecs and have seen some in the used bins, but they've either had shaft flexes that were too light, or too stiff.

In any event, what are your thoughts on the ones I've mentioned above? Are there any others that I'm missing that are just really worth looking heavily at, even if more expensive than I'd like to spend?

I would not concern myself as to what head to get, as long as you like the look it is fine, but make sure the shaft is right for you... There is nothing standard anymore and shafts differ one to another even if they are the same flex... If you know what your swing speed is, get it for a 3 wood and 5 wood, then look at the specs online to see where those shafts fall into... I can not stress to enough people about the correct shaft, so many people forget that and that is the engine in the club...

I searched high and low, east and west, far and near, for a good 3-wood... hit many many clubs, demoed everything under the sun... eventually settled on a Sonartec I had never hit, and I absolutely love the club. Tour Edge was my second favorite.

I landed a Mizuno F-50 from ebay, by accicent
I actually purchased an 04 Callaway 4w and dude mixed up our order and sent me the F-50
after realizing that it would cost too much to ship the clubs to the appropriate owners, he refunded me my $40 + $20 for the mix up
so I guess I am paid to use this club!! hahah!!!

but I'm telling you, this club is the shiz!
I have never really been a fw "hitter", but dude this thing is absolutley amazing

I actually game a DG SL S300 Steel shaft in it too
It is a good club for me anywhere from 220-245 AND STRAIGHT as an arrow!
My confidence in this club is through the roof and I am now hitting par 5's in 2, or at least closer in two
It has taken at least 2+ strokes off my game, because I can now reach par 5's in less strokes

You can pick up the F series woods on ebay for dirt cheap, as this one sold for only $40 USD w headcover and in MINT shape

think about it.....

First of all, get a matched 3W and 5W if possible.

And, as normdamarine suggested, make sure you get the right shaft for your swing.

If you like your hybrids, consider getting a Nickent 3W and 5W. It would be easier to blend them into your current set. I don't play the Ns, but they seem to sell well in the local golf shops. And, I rarely see any show up in the used club bin.

Also, I would stay away from eBay on this one. If you buy the woods face to face, you can to test-hit them to see how they blend in with the hybrids.

If I told you that a Hogan JUNIOR 3w head, on a Fuji E370 stiff shaft was the best "3W" - more like a 5W, that I have ever ever ever hit, you would probaly die from laughing.

But its true. Off the tee or grass. It sure seems to be a high-handicapper's dream come true!

$10 for the head, $35 for a pulled shaft - which was probably too much.

Watching the ball go 200 yards, priceless!
seeing other golfers do the same with it, priceless!!

that is all.

If you like your Nickent 3dx rc 3H, think about getting the 1H and 2H instead of a 3W and 5W. I love my Nickent 3dx rc 17 degree 2H. My 3wood and 5 wood have been removed from my bag since purchasing the Nickent 17 degree.

Taylormade woods works the best for me. They go far, get good trajectory and feel good at contact. G10 is next on my list. Either way try it out, and make sure you get a shaft that matches your swing!

Well, I went to several different golf stores last weekend looking and trying. I was liking the Nickents; however, they only had 5W and 7Ws to choose from.

I ended up picking up a used Taylormade V Steel 3W (15*) and 5W (18*) at my local Golfsmith. I'd heard/read good things on here and other forums, so I figured that with their 10 day/90% refund policy on the used clubs, it was worth a try.

I played a round with them today, and I liked them a lot. I was hitting with them more often and in more situations than I might normally to try to get a feel for them, but they performed well. I figure I'll stick with them for a while - at least until I get good enough where I could actually tell the difference between them and other woods.

So far, so good, though I do need to get them re-gripped badly, as they have the original grips that have become rather smooth.
