New Course.

Kinda wanted to see how you guys prepared for a golf course, that you never played before. Iam playing a course next week with some high school buddies, and its all for shits and giggles, but would like to be somewhat prepared for the round that day, I went to google and came across it, looks to be a decent course, kinda of and old course, that got runed down back in the day, well new owners have bought it and are pouring some money into it again, Thats one reason were playing it, I havent played the course in probably 30 years, but remember that it was hilley and alot of blind shots into the green. Just thought i would ask how you guys prepare for a new course?

I will usually check it out on google maps and then get there early. Hit on the range and talk with the starter or pro shop guys. It does always feel better to kind of know whats comming. It helps to play with someone who has played there also.

Play it from the tips....in fact play it 30' behind the tips!!

I try to study the scorecard and the course on google maps. That being said, I try to also be open minded and prepared to take the course as it comes. Being fairly new to the game I seem to be playing new courses a lot.

The biggest thing would be to find out exactly where they measure thier yardage markers to, be it the front, middle, or back of the green, and also how they mark the flag position on the green for front, middle, or back.


After all that, it really just comes down to hitting a golf shot no matter what course your on.

When I'm in doubt or want to play "safe" I will play to the 150 marker from the tee.

I load it to my GPS unit. I have a Upro. With that you can preview the course with yardages of everything mapped out.
From that you might make a list of questions to ask about certain holes.

I would load it and preview it and then just has at it myself.

i absolutely love playing new courses and if i had the time and money id play a diff course everytime i played... that being said...
i dont have a gps yet ... so knowing where and how they mark yardages on the course is key for me... i usually ask either at the proshop or a starter...
i also check out the score card and can pretty much figure out certain things depending on how the scorecard is even set up...
some courses are great with info... other courses not so much... but thats part of the challenge...
once i get a gps unit ill fear no virgin courses... unless the course info isnt available... lol
