I have mixed feelings about scrambles as well. We host one every November named "The Chili Open". It isn't a charity based tourny but you can't say we really profit from it either... hell last year we basically broke even. We do it to bring our family and friends together to get hammered, eat some chili, and play some golf.

There is definitely some cheating that goes on during scrambles, though there isn't much you can do about it. It is funny though as their is always 5-10 teams (mine included) there that do want to win and try our best but none of us have ever actually won. Guess we will have to do better than 13 under this year ;)

So basically the idea is have fun with your group and thats it.

It's a great chance to learn a thing or two as well.

I've played in two of these events this year. The first event had our team loaded with two really great putters. We were playing the tourney on my home course and it was really cool seeing the reads these two would come up with. I learned a lot from them. One of the facets of their decisions was heavily focused on grain....it was interesting to learn. The second event was with a group from work. It was a great chance to get to know everyone in an off-the-job setting. The tourney hosts did it up big....there were ladies coming out every couple of holes with complimentary beverages.....and there were well stocked coolers on many holes, too. Let's just say we had plenty of swing lube in our systems. There was an awesome spread to eat afterwards, too....wings, BBQ, etc. Have fun and don't sweat the guys cheating. There was a guy in the group ahead of ours who was greasing his driver.

I play in them all the time as well and know about the cheating and just have fun with them. What no one has mentioned is how bad they are for your game if you are like most people(maybe just me) if one of the guys I am play with hits the fairway well by god it's a green light to try and let one fly,and you already know what comes next a really long cart ride or lost ball.To me they are bad for my game,if I could go first everytime it may be better and like someone else said if the putt is made before you putt maybe you should putt out anyway if your not holding people up.Having said all this I play in about 6 or 7 a year mostly for charity and have a ball doing it and never expect to win much.

come to find 4 idiots that couldn't hold your jock strap on the course

I don't wear a jock while golfing. Maybe this is why I don't score as well as I should.

Just go out and have fun. You can't control what other people do.

Also if you do end up being serious and trying to win then keep track of how many times your team uses your shots. You may realize that you birdied or even eagled a hole yourself.

I love scrambles. Gives me a chance to erlax, settle down, get set and have fun trying out new techniques. Especially now that I have new clubs. I can't wait to play this scramble I'm in sunday. A chance to get to know the new set and see what I can do when I don't hold back.

If you`re going for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a 18 hole scramble, there`s too many teams! I play in scrambles, but hate them. I`d rather play stroke or 4 ball anyday. But, it seems scrambles have become the "norm". Oh,well.

How would a foursome be paired with another foursome? Eight people playing in a group?

Its actually pretty common

Not where I play , as fivesomes are outlawed, I'd probably have to keep the defibrillator in my bag, for when the starters see 8 trying to go off in one group.

I can't stand them anymore. For work I have to play in about 20 per year and I get real sick of them - 6 hour rounds, 3 hour dinners, lots of drunk people, I always win a womens xs golf shirt or 12 topflights as a door prize.

now I forget about golf at all, and just shoot the sh*t for 6 hours and work on some shots I wouldn't normally hit

Yeah the last one I played in a bunch of hacks submitted a 12 under while some scratch players that formed a group shot a 62. My group played 1 under using my ball a lot but we had a bunch of 20+ handicaps, no studs, but 2 women to give us good fairway positioning on some holes.

Oh and thats the next thing that bothers me. How is it that the difference between the pro and amateur tees is 15 yds on a whole, but its 110yds to the womens tees? I wonder how a guy with a sex change would do in the LPGA

    • Day 34 (14 Dec 25) - Got outside for a few moments to work on bump and runs with the 4h (again using the exaggerated weight shift reminder of the left (lead) heel). Finding that it helps keep the downswing arc extended.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
