Hello everyone!!!! Newbie here....first new thread!! Yay! :) Well, I'm in the market for some new irons. I'm a former college player working on getting my game back. Currently I'm a 4 handicap, but I need some help deciding what irons to get. I always had the tendency to get super player irons when I was in high school and college (titleist blades, etc) and I could hit them okay, but I shouldn't have been playing them. Right now I am still hitting those blades, but I need something else. Here's what I want in the new irons....workability with as much forgiveness as possible. Vague huh? :) Well, I think that is the smartest way to go....I want an iron that I can still shape shots with, but then gives me the most forgiveness as possible. I've heard Taylormade irons are good options (R7 TP I heard), but I wanted everyone's opinion because let's face, you guys know your golf!!! Looks don't matter to me, price not so much I guess....I just want something I can shape, but at the same time I can get the most forgiveness available for that type of iron. Thanks everyone in advance!!!

Ok, cool! Any recommendations? Preferrably some forgiving ones, but also ones I can work left and right??

Go to a Pro Shop, and hit alot of different brands, I bought a new set of irons this summer,Wilson Ci7, not the most expensive, but i bought what i could afford, and Love them, listen to the guys here as well, they are very helpful. Best of luck in your choice, and your Game.

jlund: I am not hijacking your thread, but will be following this one closely since I am planning on a new set of irons in October. Currently using Talyor Made RAC Irons from a few years back. Hit a Burner Iron here recently and it was very nice feeling. Not sure if it would be good at shaping shots or not. Have also heard the good things about Mizuno Irons from some of the good golfers at my course.

Mike

I like the MP-57's, but they just came out with MP-58's in their place. Take a look at the entire MP line...

Mp 57's

Mx-200

Mx-25

Those kind of sound like what your looking for in Mizuno's...

Also look at Nike's new VR irons, along with the TM Burner's.. People have said great things about both of those.

Sumo 10.5*
R7 Draw 15* 3W
3dx 17* 2H
Pi5 3-PW
Spin Milled Vokey 54* CG11 60* C-01

I would look into the Mp-60 rather than the Mp-57.

The 60's are a very workable club while still not being a full blade. It's a hybrid of sorts unlike the 57.

If it were me I would look at the mp57s but i also like the looks of the 52s and 62s. I would also look at the AP2's, i am a little biased but the are great irons. Also the TM TPs are great looking.

AP2 3-PW PX 5.5

To the OP: Are you looking for workability high and low, or just left and right..??

Im pretty sure any iron you buy can be worked left and right because thats just a face angle issue.... If your looking to work trajectories, then that's where iron recommendations will help..

I'm looking for some workable irons as well, so I will be following this one closely!

Good luck

Jim

Take a look at the Callaway X-Forged 09 irons. That's what i have and i think it's absolutely great. Plus, the cavity back helps with forgiveness.

Driver: FT Tour 9.5
Fairway woods: X-Fairway 3 and 5
Irons: : X-Forged '09 3-PW in Carolina Blue, Oklahoma Orange, and Wake Forest Green grips.
Wedges: X-Forged '09 54-14 and Vokey Spin-Milled 60-7
Putter: Odyssey Black Series #8

Preferred Ball: Z-star Tour Yellow

In the Pockets: Ball, Ecotee, Switchblade Divot Repair tool, Pencil w/ Eraser.

Have you given any thought to a combo set? Are you looking to start a set with a 3I? If the answer is "yes" to both, I would make the following recommendations:

1) Bridgestone J36 series. These are forged, minimal offset and are available in CB and in blades. So, you might think about a 3I-6I in a CB and a 7I-PW in a blade. Plus, you can get them really cheap, brand new for less than $400.

2) Mizuno MP57-A player's CB with a good amount of forgiveness and perhaps the most of any MP line.

3) Taylormade TP Forged-Similar to the MP57 line. Another player's cavity.

4) Lastly, if you're not averse to going with a component company, I suggest looking at Geotech, Wishon and KZG. They all make player's CB, minimal offset and all undergo a multiple time forging process for a soft feeling club. The best thing about these is that you can have them built to your exact specs, with high end shafts and grips for less than a name brand club.

Best of luck with your search.

Also consider Callaway irons. With your ability to return to a single-digit handicap, I'd take a look at the X20 Tour, X22 Tour or the X Forged.

Callaway gives the following comparison of their current iron models on their web site:
http://www.callawaygolf.com/Global/e...omparison.html

Also, take a look at Golf Digest equipment review comments on the Callaway X line on this web site:
http://www.golfdigest.com/equipment/ratings

Regardless of which irons you get, will you have the life control to be a " semi-pro" ... someone who plays six times a month and gets to practice in between?

A former college player I played with in a scramble told me he had opted to play game improvement clubs. He had gaps in between when he could play, and felt the forgiveness was needed since he didn't have time to maintain the finely tuned swing of his college days.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Nice post! So are you saying that if you live in a climate where there is a cold winter, where you can only play 7-8 months a year that you should get GI irons because you wont be able to play or practice for 4 months outta the year??

Thats an interesting point because I really wanted to get some MP57's, but I'll be moving to Boulder, CO soon and wont be able to play 4 months out of the 12... Jim

im a college student who had a low budget and wanted new clubs so when i saw wilsons new di9 irons with a 4 Fybrid (yes Fybrid) for 329.00 and free shipping i had to get them and i could not be happier they are easy to hit and for game improvement irons u can shape shots fairly well i highly recommend these clubs and they are look great in the bag.

I would say check out the Nike Victory Red Spilt Cavities as well. I went for the full cavity because I wanted more forgiveness than you would probably need. I have been amazed with how soft and pure these Irons feel when I hit them. I you like some of the Mizunos mentioned above, I would definitely say at least give these a look over.

In my opinion, Titleist and Mizuno make the best irons in the world for a large manufacturer. Other manufacturers try to enter the good player club market and have done fairly well, but these are the two companies that have done it since their inception and thus have the most credibility. Top amateurs and professionals without sponsors tend to gravitate towards these manufacturers.

Since you're a good golfer, try a small forged cavity back. The Titleist 695CB and The Mizuno MP-62's are really nice. A mishit will feel harsh, but the result will not be so bad. Best of both worlds!

    • Day 3 (5 Apr 25) - long day with setup and rehearsal for band’s church service gig tomorrow.  Got home to hit a very chippy wedges (from about 10ft to out to 40yds or so).  Focus was simple - feel the bounce and quiet hands.
    • Day 187 - 2025-04-05 Got my time in today. Hoping to get a little more time in tomorrow, though. May get there early.
    • Day 14: 4/5/25 Putting through 50 mm gates.
    • While on vacation in Punta Cana a few weeks ago I played with rental clubs, Mizuno Pro 245's with KBS Tour Lite steel shafts. Surprisingly, I was blown away, not only by the distance, trajectory and dispersion I was getting but also about how soft and buttery they felt. It got me thinking.... IT'S TIME FOR NEW IRONS! Just yesterday, at my local Golf Galaxy, I tested them again side by side with the JPX Forged (recommended by the Mizuno rep who happened to be there) which also felt pretty good. Not as buttery soft as the 245's but they did produce slightly better numbers on off-center hits. Also, I haven't played with forged clubs with steel shafts in 10 years thinking I was getting too old and that I needed the lighter weight but these clubs with that shaft felt really, really good. So that's my long and drawn-out intro to my question: Does anyone here at TST play with either of these clubs and if so, what's your opinion?
