I keep a copy of the "Decisions on the Rules of Golf" on my bedside table. Between "fall asleep novels" I will read sections of the Decisions. I've probably read through this copy multiple times, but I still discover strange, weird, and surprising rulings that actually make reading the rules/decisions interesting -- it is kind of fun, if you are a golf addict. How else are you to know that a Pineapple in a bunker is removable (if there are no pineapple trees around) or that you can replay some shots without penalty (if you hit a power line within the course, for example.) I'm talking about exciting stuff...

In real life, I will always look up the answer if I'm uncertain... and sometimes even if I feel that I'm certain. The real key to being good with the Rules of Golf is knowing how to find the answer when you are uncertain, or when the person you are making the ruling for doesn't believe the answer and needs to see it in black and white.

When you participate in a 4 day USGA Rules Workshop, they give a 100 question examination at the end... 50% of the test is open book. They are not only testing your knowledge of the rules, but also your knowledge of the reference materials (The Rules of Golf and The Decisions on the Rules). My last workshop I got 80 out of 100... the class average was 76.

If you got 20 percent wrong, and 50% of the test was open book, that mean it must be a tough exam.

It's all "open book" on the course, problem is too many "golfers" have NEVER opened the book.

    • So hit the😝 irons crooked AND play layup golf?? Hahaha.. no thanks. I would rather stay home. 😊
    • First - glad to see these popping up again. Now to the topic at hand - I would rather be option 1.  If I know how far it's going (I mean a yard or two) I can always play to the wider parts of the fairway and/or the green and still do reasonably well.  Now if I could just really hit the "number" that well.
    • Day 2 (10 Mar 25) - Long day of driving to dr appt with son.  Thankfully got in one of my fave putting drills (two ball side by side) - the goal to have both balls come off the putter face equally by having them come off the putter face as close to the same time as possible.  First few rolls - the toe was leading the way as that ball flew off the face.  By the end of the drill both balls were basically equal off the face, rolling to within a couple of inches of each other.  Nice drill of focusing on squaring the face.  BTW - I was using the old Odyssey DF992.
    • Day 161 - 2025-03-10 Got a decent, long session in. Focused mostly on the backswing feels, and moved on toward the end of the four hours (not all hitting balls, I installed a motion sensing light switch in there too, and worked with a student over FaceTime for a bit) on the downswing feel.
    • Day 31: 3/10/25 Backswing drills with the ProSendr. Reinforcing iron play from yesterday.
