It depends on if you are there for the buddies or there for the golf. If it's the former, enjoy stuff you may not get to do often. Play poker til 1am, go out to eat, hit the bar, etc. If it's the latter, hit the greens early.

I go on 3 such trips a year and try to enjoy both the golf and the buddies. Although, it can be hard to play golf with a heavy hangover (coincidentally, I get about 3 hangovers a year). It is what it is.

Bring a rule book in your bag and make sure you know the rules that can help you.

Also make sure you have atleast two pairs of shoes as it bad for your shoes and your feet to wear the same shoes two days in row.

Never heard of that one before. Why is it bad to wear the same shoes two days in a row? Does it apply only to golf shoes?

What evidence is there?

This applies to all shoes - your shoes need time to properly dry. It helps prevent bacteria buildup and prolongs the life of your shoes. You should smell a hockey locker room - often times there's not enough time between games to properly dry equipment. When everyone opens up the zippers on their hockey bags it's nasty. "Better" yet, sit in the row directly behind the players bench for a junior hockey game.

Anyway, regarding golf shoes. 6.5 rounds in 4 days is a lot of time to wear even the most comortable shoes - your muscles and tendons will appreaciate the change of pace. Tips for the getaway? 1.) The shoes thing applies to socks and underwear too. 2.) Don't over practice - just gauge the speed of the greens and hit a few long shots to see what your tendency is that day (unless you hit the ball perfectly straight every time, in which case you can sleep in). 3.) Bring plent of balls - add a couple of distance balls so you can all have a go at that impossible carry on that certain par 5 (there always seems to be one somewhere). 4.) Have fun - life is so short, and relatively speaking, a round of golf is even shorter.

Don't ask anyone what they hit off the tee. And if someone asks, don't tell them. And don't agree not to call penalties if you want to ask. And don't chip range balls off the course if you're adjacent to the range.

On second thought, don't even go. It's a waste of time. I know you're going to break a rule and not notice. Just sell your clubs and turn yourself into a local authority right now.

I plan/go on a trip every year with 11 of my buddies. We all look forward to the trip greatly. Here's a few thoughts:

  • Golf - try to relax and play your normal game (beer may help with this). Some guys are so geeked about going and competing, etc they get wound up and play badly. The first year or two we went I found this happened to me. Discovered that I needed to calm down (beer) and not over swing.
  • As long as it's been mentioned. The days that we play 2 rounds, I change socks in between the 2 18's and it makes a huge difference
  • The beer/golf balance and the night life - finding the right balance between having fun with your boys at night and not being miserable on the course during the day is important. The last thing you want to do is go on your golf trip and hate the time you're actually golfing.
  • Yardage Book or GPS - get one or the other
Hope you have a blast. Just reading this thread gets me thinking about starting to plan our trip in April.

Take three Advil one hour before each round. It's the only way I survive our golf weekend.

Got it - leather needs to dry out between wearings. If you rotate your golf shoes and dress shoes so they never get worn on back to back days they will last MUCH longer. roughly two pairs of leather shoes rotated will last 4 times or more as long as 1 pair of shoes. I know allot about leather shoes and from personal experience can confirm this, I have also read the same goes for running shoes.

The Cedar shoe tree thing helps as well.

Hit mulligans, give yourself gimmies, use the foot wedge, Lost balls aren't penalties - because if you had a gallery like the pros your ball would surely be found, make 6 write down 5, change balls on the green, change balls on the tee, lift clean and replace, putt croquette style, put vaseline on your driver face... etc...

    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
    • Day 552, May 7, 2024 Played nine holes with @NatalieB with irons only from her tees. Didn't really finish out any holes, just hit the irons and approaches and some chips.
    • What has gone downhill? Have you been practicing properly, filming your swing, working on exactly what he suggested without straying? My thoughts are that your results/outcomes from a lesson a year ago probably aren't all that relevant anymore.  And carry distance is far more important than total distance. Total distance is going to vary significantly based on course conditions.
    • One thing that has helped me tremendously is to spray the club face with foot powder when I am on the range. Seeing ball impact can be quite helpful if you are hitting shots all over the place. It's not the cure all, but a good little thing to do on the range. The other thing, and I will forget to do it, is the pre-shot routine. Find me a spot a foot or so from the ball in-line with my target, take my stance, take the swing.  Sometimes you take a BS practice swing with no thought. Make it deliberate.  As far as swing thoughts. I have 3 check-points. First is set-up, Second is my take away, Third is my downswing. I cant explain what I think I just know in my mind. Its a feeling that I have that feels right and experience has shown that if I follow those 3 thoughts more than likely the outcome will be what I was looking for. Now, thinking about the feeling and executing it properly is a whole different thing, that;s why I practice, I used to be over a 20 handicap, I am down to a 15.1 in about a year.  I feel like its good progress. the goal is a 10 by the end of the year. If I make it great, if not, hey at least Im not in Gaza. LOL
