Hi,

If you're a single digit (or even better, a plus) handicapper and want a free round of golf at a course of your choice in the NY metro area, keep reading.

I will pay for your round of golf and a meal plus drinks if you would be willing to play a round with yours truly (me). All you would have to do is play and maybe give a few pointers; I will not harass you with questions if I get the feeling that you would like to be left alone. If you'd like, you don't even have to talk to me but you must play in the same grouping as me and allow me to watch you swing from around a 20 foot radius for each of your strokes. (yes, this does sound creepy but it defeats the whole purpose if i can't watch and learn). Also you can bring someone else but i'm not paying for them too (unless they are a PGA or Nationwide Tour card holders, then I'll pay for both of you to play 36 holes each)

I've been playing for about a year (in Oct it will be a year) and have gotten down to about a 16 handicap, but I am sick of getting paired up with people who are not good; it brings my game down after watching their swings for the first 5 or 6 holes. I'm dead serious about getting better and I think this would help accelerate the process. Plus I've always heard that the only way to get better is to play with people who are better than you. This, plus the fact that I really only have one or two friends that I play golf with, has led me to create this thread.

A little bit about myself: I'm 26, asian, work at an investment bank, and goto the driving range for about 6-10 hours a week.

Please reply to the thread or PM me if necessary. Sorry, but i'm not a part of a private club, otherwise, i'd invite you there.

Oh yeah, if we go play and you end up shooting a 96, you're not a single digit handicapper - so please only people who really are skilled golf players and not "I can drive it 400 yards because I can type it in a forum" people.

Let's just say if you come along and your round gets paid for and it becomes quite obvious that you were full of sh*t, I won't be happy.

Thanks for looking!

Regards,
Alan

i wish i lived in new york. i would definantly do it just because i like golfing with new people. if your trying to improve just practice 5-10 footer on a carpet at home for about a half hour while your watching tv or something at night. i promice you will drop strokes like crazy

edit: and keep the ball in play, hit 3 wood if you dont have 25+ yards on atleast on side of the fairway because you can always hit a longer iron into the green but you cant even hit greens in regulation if your dropping a ball

Not volunteering for the job as you can see from my handicap, but I would bet that most single digits on here would be happy enough to just come and play with you without you having to pay. Guess I can't speak for everyone though, I mean I would haha. And if your going to LI, may I recommend any of the Bethpage courses? lol

Wouldn't the money be better spent if you get an on course lesson with that money?

Also, when you see some of the lower handicap players, you might be in for a disappointment. Some do not have good fundamentals but have found their own swing. All of them have a very good short game and putt well.

You might look into joining a weekend league if you are looking for playing partners.

What a wierd offer..lol. Youre not a creepy craigslist killer, are you? Im no teacher of the game, but ill play some golf depending on where it is.. Seriously though, I would recommend a teacher like a PGA pro to help you along. Playing with better players always helps, because you tend to pick up good habits, but you should be working with a qaulified professional that will teach you the proper fundementals if you truly desire to get better.

As someone who has worked with many investment bankers (me no banker), and if OP is a front office analyst MBA etc.., this sounds legitimate and not at all Craigslist creepy as most bankers are results oriented and very competitive.

In NYC, getting a round paid for is nice, but it usually costs more to get to the course if you live in Manhattan.

He might get what he asked for for free as I've been paired up many times with low handicappers. Just play on Black or Red at an early time. I've been paired with multiple scratch players - you get tired of saying nice shot all the time. Have been paired up with good players during twilight too, but much less often.

I've asked good players for advice before and you might get some good advice, but I got more out of watching their ball flight, tempo, short game, how they set up, etc... I found I got alot more from a lesson with a very high quality teacher with video playback.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

It is a creepy request no matter where you are from!

Like others have stated spend the money on a playing lesson it's cheaper in the long run. You'll get specific instruction for your game, by someone that is getting paid to do so.

If what you want is to play with better players and see how they play a full round, that's been covered too.

I'd look into a playing lesson. Several of my local instruction centers have where you can have one of the teaching pros follow you around for a while. I'd find that much more valuable.

This is exactly why I started this post - I feel that I always start my round out wonderfully when I get paired with random high handicaps but then if there's some bad tempo in the group it rubs off and ruins my ballstriking. My muscle memory isn't as programmed as it should be since I haven't been playing for long enough I guess. My handicap is what it is from my lack of practicing my short game.

I'm working with a PGA pro and I get a lesson every two months (3 so far) and he gives me something to work on (usually with some sort of gadget) and I head to the driving range relentlessly to get it right. My driving range ball striking is solid now - I will hit every ball off of a range mat straight, or with a 5-15 yard draw to a hook. So I really want to be able to start bringing this to the course and I figure this will definitely help. I've gotten a couple of offers and I'll let you guys know how it turns out. By the way - I work in prime services right now at an IB, so I wouldn't be considered an investment banker.. was too much of a retard in college and wasted a ton of opportunities and second chances.. but that's another story. no excuses in golf and in life eh? Thank you all for expressing your interest and for your responses and feedback!!!

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.Β
