and if you are in a place like me where the snow will fly, the courses will close and you're left with 5-6 months of no golf, what do you do over the winter to keep/work on your game?

This is my first really serious year in golf and with the way I'm ending it I hate the thought of stopping for 5-6 months and losing the progress I've made.

For those in similar climates, what drills and types of practice do you do to keep yourself in touch with the game?

For me, I'll be looking to practice putting indoor, some chipping and just making sure I go through my current swing every day or to to keep in feel with it.

In my bag:

Nike SQ DYMO 10.5
Big Bertha 3 Wood
Big Bertha 3-10 IADAMS Tom Watson Classic 54,58 and 64 Wedges Nike Oz 5 Putter/Wilson Staff ( not sure model, bought it in second hand store ) Ball: Bridgestone E6

There are a couple places where I live that have the virtual golf indoors. I think my friends and I are going to go there over the winter just to keep our swings somewhat in a groove. I hate the winter

5-6 months? Dear god that must suck.

Word.

The winters here in the MidWest allow for golf if you're dedicated. There will be windows of 40˚- 50˚ that can be seized to keep the rust from settling in in the off season. I plan to play at least 8 times from December through February.

No windows here.....even if the temp was manageable the course will be under x number of feet of snow.......

It sucks, but with an NHL season and two kids playing minor hockey it fills the time.

Zack, I've heard we have one here too. Virtual golf along with a winter golf school that I might take a look at.

Similar here in Colorado ... winter isn't a fun time to golf. I am going to try to get out to practice more this winter rather than hang up the clubs completely. I am going to putt more inside my apartment, even though it's on the carpet.

I don't know of many indoor hitting areas aside from GolfTec where I've been getting some lesson at. But you have to pay a few hundred bucks to be able to practice there over the winter without taking any lessons.

Midwest here too. Not too often do we have lots of snow staying on the ground, so like Jay-Bird said if there is a 40-50 degree window I'll be out taking advantage of it! I also have a full-size practice net and a driving range mat. I can set both up in the garage and have a pretty sweet at-home driving range! Mostly stick to shorter irons to avoid hitting anything w/ my woods on the backswing or followthrough, but it helps just keep the muscle memory.

Ya oneF457z, I thought about getting a mat & a net to hit into over the winter. I hate hitting into nets ... that's how my golf lessons at GolfTec are, but I guess hitting something is better than nothing.

I don't have a garage to hit into though ... we live in an apartment, so I wonder if I could get away with putting the net into the spare bedroom.

A great putting aid is The Rail by Harold Swash. This should keep you entertained and your putting stroke honed during winter.
Padraig Harrington (amongst others) uses it. They are not easy to find but they are out there.
Here is a YouTube link to what they look like.
